I need a new cordless drill - Makita, Bosch, Milwakee, Porter Cable?

My 10 year old 14.4 Makita drill is slowly wearing out, Ni-mH battery packs are getting tired, clutch in the drill chuck is starting to not lock up in drill mode, and so on........

Anyone have any good sources, or suggestions, on a good modern technology cordless drill?

I know they have Lithium Ion batteries now, as well as some attractive "Drill/Skill-saw/saws-all sets."

I don't really want a monster sized 24+ volt pack, too heavy, maybe an 18 or 20-22 volt max.

Suggestions on where to get a good deal besides Flea-bay?

thanks!

I have a Makita that i've had for years and still works like brand new.

If you're not opposed to them on Moral grounds, Wal Mart is probably as cheap as you'll find them anywhere. I got mine at Home depot about 8 years ago, it's a 12v, and has never lacked the grunt required to do any job.

Unless you are a contractor and gonna use it everyday, you don't need Milwaukee or DeWalt.
Ryobi is a very good brand for around the house/garage. DEFINATELY get the Lithium Ion series in whatever you get.
I bought the Ryobi Lith ion Combo kit with Drill, Recip saw, shop light and 7" circular saw with batteries and charger.
Home Depot offers a Extended Protection Plan and if any of the tools die, they replace it.

While not a contractor, I do use my tools almost daily on a 5 acre ranch I own and Ryobi just won't cut it, maybe fine for Snipers uses of hanging pictures of many ex girlfriends, but I want my stuff to last more than a couple years protection plan or not.

I work my tools and use them hard.

Good review of drills on Popular Mechanics.

SWEET review of cordless drills by Popular Mechanics, seemed to run them through their paces pretty well. That Makita of editors "best over-all" choice seems pretty sweet, I like metal over plastic Ryobis! Ever drop tools from ladders?, plastic just don't cut it.

Popular Mechanics back in 2008 seemed to run them through their paces pretty well.

I bought a Porter Cable 18v at HD a while back. Awesome performance.

I use a De-Walt 18 volt cordless hammer drill. I use it every day. I've dropped it several times and it keeps on working. The batteries don't last if they are left outside in the truck in the winter.

My 14.4V Porter Cable is 12 years old and still works flawlessly. Both batteries still hold a charge for 3-4 hours (ea) of hard work and charge with-in 30 minutes. Gives me a chance to admire my work and plan the next move. or..... Got my money back years ago.

Don't know if Porter Cable still builds good stuff, but I have a couple of 14.4 cordless that work great. Had em for a lot of years, use them most weekends for just puttering around on home maintenance stuff. 2 drills, 4 batteries, I can go all day without a recharge.

I REALLY like my Makita (cordless and corded hammer) drills. I also don't think I've ever heard anything but good about Milwaukee. Some folks like Dewalt, some don't. I had a moderate Dewalt corded drill (but it was a really cheap one).

I'd happily by another Makita, and would probably also have a Milwaukee if I ever found one that fit the bill.

A good source for Makitas is

Rusty we are HELL on tools and the Makita 18v Li-ion stuff is the best yet... those zebra looking drills kick ass... The porta band? Fricking awesome... the sawzall? the best...

Seriously... Its all worth it... The stuff is so light too and the batteries really last...

I have had Ryobi (garbage) Dewalt / Black& Decker (no complaints) and now Panasonic. The Panasonic was the most expensive but is small and very well made. It has a 15v battery that pulls like an 18. It is sort of the Porsche of drills.

HOWEVER, I bought when Lithium batteries were still pretty special so I did not get one. I thought the build quality of the Dewalt / B&D was perfectly acceptable only that the model I previously owned (stolen by D-bag tenant) had horrible balance.

The short coming of the Panasonic? Old tech batteries. They rocked when new. Now, they are only good. I would buy the Lithium batteries now.

After disposables like B&D and DeW. I bought a Milwaukee and it is the best IMO.

I am a contractor. We have use a lot of them out there, and my favorite is still my little Panasonic. The new one that I really like is the small lil' girlie Bosch drill. Its small and has enough tq to do most general stuff. Our Dewalt batteries did not last too long. The guys really like Makitas. So now we have a few of them hanging around. They know not to touch my girle Bosch drill.

I know that was a joke... But I will point out... We have had the 24v Rigid stuff too... It may be powerful but its MASSIVE and the batteries are going to crap after not too long... We've had DeWalt too... Like I said... If you want to USE this stuff... Buy makita and don't look back...
