And yes, a "few folks" care. Very few. Even at a car event, (unless it's Pebble Beach or the like), most look at the concours display with a lot of weird curiosity. Ferry Porsche supposedly hated the concours crowd with a passion. He devoted his whole life to creating the best drivers' car and then some strange people bought them and instead of driving them, they kept them in a garage and cleaned the underside with Q-tips. Why not just have a picture of the car on the wall?

A few folks wash their hands 300 times a day as well. The point of this thread is to mention a fantastic car and an owner that actually understands the principle of enjoying life. If owning your beautiful 911S for 30+ years while driving it very little and cleaning it 2 or 3 hours for every hour driven made you happy, more power to you. I don't think that it did, based on your posts here. It seems to have made you miserable.
Denis...you're making assumptions about me that simply aren't true...but I'll let you enjoy your fantasy.

Let's just say I drove the old 911S as much as your wealthy friend drives his restored speedster...probably more. T'wasn't the car that made me unhappy...but it was the cause of krap being directed my way by a handful of people during the last few years I owned it.

I'm pretty content these days...driving a well balance and inexpensive car when & where I like. No krap from other than a few like you on this board.

Gotta tell ya, Denis...after having had krap tossed my way by professional krap tossers? Your efforts are little farts...drifting on the breeze.

Personally, I like your pony and liked your 911 - both great rides belonging to a great guy.

A 356 is on my list of cars I want to own someday... but most likely it will be a fake for monetary reasons.

As far as daily driver... been commuting in Lost Angeles for decades and my cars have survived well.

Denis - gorgeous car! Hope your buddy enjoys it. Timely post. I think you'll enjoy this - this made my day today. Pulled into a lot this morning and this car was parked up front. Glorious 356 daily driver/survivor. Covered in primer and bondo, and you can see where the nose weld line is rusting out. The interior was near-perfect/unrestored, and it looked mechanically tight. I tried to connect with the owner, but I had a meeting and couldn't find the time. This is 356 goodness, it doesn't get much better than this (except for that baby blue 356 coupe that is at Daytona every year...those who have seen it know which one I mean)...

Just standing next to it, it smelled heavenly.

Paul - you sold your 911???

Funny how your perspective changes with wealth.

The Speedster Denis posted about is worth, what, $150K? Maybe $200K?
In the scheme of things, especially in LA, you see $200K cars used as daily beaters. If this were a new Bentley being used as intended, it wouldn't raise an eyebrow. After a couple years of daily use, it would be sold for 40% of the original purchase price and the owner wouldn't bat an eyelash.

Think about it for a second then. Is the value of the Speedster going down? No, it will likely rise. It has a fresh restoration that cost a LOT of money. But if it gets scratched, chipped, or dinged, can't it be redone? And will the cost of re-doing it again someday be less than the depreciation of the Bentley?

A friend/acquaintance vintage races a multi-million dollar Ferrari. He drives HARD. The Ferrari purists think it's blasphemy. In an interview he was asked why he would risk it. He said, "I could never do enough damage that it wouldn't be worth fixing." He thinks it's blasphemy NOT to drive it hard as "that's what Enzo intended."

Ferry too...

Paul, You don't sound like you're pretty content. (based on recent posts) More like you are trying to convince yourself rather than us.
Best,
Tom

Ferry too...
The '58 Speedster is a $200k car unless people suddenly lose interest in Speedsters. Not likely. The owner also has a 2011 997 Turbo S, good thing I did not post a picture of that. That would have really upset Paul.

He doesn't care about the depreciation or appreciation of either car. He's just a successful guy who loves cars and can buy anything he wants. (Or at least a million dollars worth or so w/o getting the wife too worked-up). He also has a new Tesla, a real Shelby Mustang and an absolute treasure trove of motorcycles new and old. He had a new Ferrari F-430 but sold it because he was never driving it.

There are people all over the world with expensive possessions. Millions of them. There are people with one weird painting on the wall that is worth more than a hundred '58 Speedsters. Big deal. I just posted the car as an example of what happens when big money and good taste collide head-on. My only (slight) complaint about this Speedster is that it's too restored-looking. I like them with a little patina, like a perfect pair of blue jeans. He'll drive it until it gets there, though. He's still young.

Paul:

As to your scatological references, my intention is not to inflict damage on you so I'm glad that it doesn't hurt you. I just get exasperated by certain types of negativity. You are a classic "hater", as the young folk say. You seem to get very upset by examples of people enjoying life, especially if it involves a Porsche built in the last 10 years or so. Sometimes even if it doesn't.

I could give you some great advice about how to be a happier person but I don't think that you'd accept it, or even admit that you need it.

If I'm wrong about the way that you used your car, all the better. I just did the math on miles/years and looked at the condition, (concours), and made that assumption. I'm surprised that you let someone from the rgruppe or Sregistry get under your skin like that. It's too bad. You let them win when they live rent-free in your head.

Denis Leary has a great line in "The Thomas Crown Affair" and it goes something like:

Quote:
"Look, the week before I met you, I nailed two crooked real estate agents and a guy who was beating his kids to death. So, if some Houdini wants to snatch a couple swirls of paint that are really only important to some very silly rich people, I don't really give a damn."
Substitute "swirls of paint" with "old cars" and you have a pretty good analysis of the argument here.

Nice car.

Have fun.
