My dad has an inert frag grenade (no fuse, no charge) as a souvenir from WW2. I remember bringing it to school for 3rd grade show & tell in the early 60's.
Today, that would be called an "incident".

BEWARE ! the pull handels (fuse) are inter changable !!! Make sure you know (KNOW) what you have as it could be a 4 sec fuse..not a 8 sec fuse !!!!!!!
That might cause you some time problems IN Nam we would change these out for differant aplications...................

I just gave away an inert MKII frag grenade this spring. Bough it at an Army Navy store in Jacksonville NC near camp LeJeune about 7 years ago. I think it was about $10.00.

This is a Mk2 grenade: Mk2 grenades came with a M5, M6, M10 or M204 fuze. Never an M206 fuze. But as mentioned, fuzes can be interchanged. This was a common practice on the M61 and later grenades, as different fuzes can make the grenade useful for different applications. Fuze interchange was not common with the Mk2 because the Mk2 used granulated TNT. This caused a detonation hazard when trying to change out the fuzes. (This is also why Mk2 grenades are popular as paper weights - the granulated TNT can simply be poured out.) Due to the conflicting information from your friend, and to the age of a Mk2 grenade (production ceased in the 60s), you should consider it unsafe to handle. No pics? There is always the chance your friend is just BS-ing you about even having one.

What makes you think it's a live grenade?
I have a couple like the picture above. They sell or at least used to sell them at army surplus stores.

Unscrew the fuse and pull the pin. A spring-loaded hammer strikes a primer, igniting the delay.

I assumed it was live since he was asking about the legality of owning one.
If it were an inert "dummy" grenade, there should be no question of legality. Please don't hold it if you do this. The M206 fuze has a detonator charge - like a light blasting cap charge. It can cause a pretty good injury if you're holding it when it detonates.

The lack of any paint or markings indicating a dummy would worry me too. I'm thinking you could just unscrew it but I know zero about real grenades. Don't we have some Nam vets here?
