Why do old truck feel so different cpmpare to the modern ones?
The thread started by Dennis about new drive trains on old trucks got me thinking about my old truck. I had a 72 one ton GM pick up with a 350 and a Turbo 400 tranny which I loved driving. The torque is so nice. It just keeps on pulling plus it gets up and go really well. I find the newer (90ish and on) just doesn't feel the same. The torque, the speed, and the comfort is better, but it just doesn't feel the same. the old truck feel like a tank that just would quit. I don't know how to describe it. Don't get me wrong, I like my modern pick ups, but something is missing.

steering geometry, steering ratios, frame rigidity and spring rates have come a long, long way since then. Modern truck drives so much better.

It's kinda like comparing a visceral SC to a Carrera.
I like Carreras, but compared to SCs, something's missing.

Took the family out today in my 2000 F150 to run errands. Modern trucks are amazing machines. We went down the highway and it was smooth and comfortable. 5 days ago I had 1800lbs (scales don't lie, at least I hope....) of rock in the back. It handled it fine (well.....her ass was draggin a bit.....).
I had a 1976 F-100 many moons ago. Biggest improvements in the modern trucks? Fuel injection, and suspension. Creature comforts have also improved. |

Solid axles(vs McPherson) had fewer moving joints and rubber bushings to wear out, plus heavier springs. Dependable and didn't need new parts from the dealership even if their slalom numbers were poor.

Old trucks are better. My 1991 Diesel Dodge is essentially a 1970's truck that they kept making until 1993. Its a pure and utter badass when it comes to working. It rides comfortably enough in the front (2wd) and the rear is completely solid until you have about a ton in the back...but its a truck! Newer trucks are sissified. They are full of bells and whistles you really don't need to get a load moving. I wouldn't purchase a new truck unless it was economically more feasible.

Its all about who the TARGET MARKET is...
The old trucks were meant for work, and were bought by people who needed working trucks. As such creature comforts were secondary frills which working guys didn't need and wouldn't pay for. At one time to be seen in a PU was a sign of being working class. In the 1970's that old dictum about PU trucks began to change with the advent of 4WD behemoths raised to the sky. Now PU began to be FASHION statements..the new in thing...over the years that morphed into the PU being MC Suburbanites flavor of maintaining a self reliant image. Over the decades the old workhorse PU has now been outfitted to be a comfortable and luxurious passenger vehicle while maintaining that working class image of being self reliant.

Trucks have become totally pussified. Might as well be driving a town car with a really big trunk.

Can you still by a bare bones, work pick-up? I remember a couple years ago a neighbor bought a PU to cart his Harley's around. It was pretty plain Jane. I was really surprised that it had wind-up windows. I didn't even know anyone made wind-up windows any more.

I know Cevy/GM always put out a 1500 model called a W/T (work truck) Bare bones as you can get, power nothing, vinyl seats, rubber flooring. Do'nt know if they still produce it.

Mac Struts? on what truck? ( You do know that MAC struts are on Mustangs right? - designed by a FORD engineer to save $$$$ ) Solid axle trucks are pretty rare. mostly 1 ton or 4x4. My Silverado has un equal lenght a arms and coils up front. a live axle located by two buggy springs in the rear. It does have a pretty sweet hydro formed frame and a snazzy rack and pinion rack. Where they failed on the truck is that they used Japanese style ball joint vs. 1960's American style which are angle angled not straight. they wear out sooner
