Lycoming flat 4's, especially the older ones, sure have crankcase design elements that seem very similar to the volkswagen type 1's. Is there some historical link there, or do they just look similar?

So that's not a water cooled version, and I get that it has a flat fan, but what is it that makes it a 962 motor rather than a 911/930 motor?
