What I have found CarMax good for, in my experience, was unloading a Honda Ridgeline for my cousin who had lost his license (and needed cash) so no Carfax, no "tire kickers", etc. here's your money.
While there, I had been looking at getting a newer/used car and there was a great selection to test drive without having to drive all over town. Was able to compare an Audi A4 Avant to a BMW 3 series AWD wagon to a Lexus SUV to a BMW X5. Didn't buy anything but the salesman was willing to grab the keys and go with any car on the lot.

If they claim it passed, then when reinspected by someone independant of Carmax it fails, the first inspection was bogus. This fairly screams "shady operator" to me.
Yes they should have known it was not a legal exhaust, straight pipes do not come as a surprise, unless they pushed it off the transport.

THE EXHAUST IS/WAS LEGAL. It passed emissions. A cat-back exhaust would not affect emissions performance. A cat-back exhaust would pass a state roadworthiness inspection. The only item that would not have passed a new inspection was the $20 wiper blades that were probably fine at the initial inspection. But you might not read this before commenting again.

Eric, you might want to read something past the initial post. Everything I have posted is accurate. It failed emissions on retest is the bit of information you may have missed.
You have your opinion, I have mine. I have lost interest in your opinion.

To retail a used vehicle in Va it must pass state inspection and depending on what county the dealership is in; pass va emissions prior for sale to the public

To clearify........... the vehicle did pass emissions. Va state specs that all OE emissions equipment be intact, which it is. The rear resonators have been eliminated. It's a noise issue. Technically the exhaust will pass Va state.
The drivers wiper on the other hand does not, Indicating, at least to me The Dulles location' s inspector did little more than a cursory look, then a "lick-n-stick"...........which leads me to not believe they did nothing more than glance at it for their pre-purchase inspection My negativity is with ALL the indicators. If only the wiper, I would have bought it that day

YES!! - First unbelievable good experience second time this Sat. GM set us up with new sales guy who was very courteous, not pushy, professional and did all that I asked previous guy.
Sat morn raining here. Again, Call new sales guy back earlt Sat am and request that the veh be in the service lane/bays to inspect before test driving. Get there and soon as we clear the entrance, greats us with a genuine smile and immediately walks us back into the service area where it is sitting in the detail bay (the lighting there is better). Offers me shop rags, safety glasses. Opens doors for wife to get in and test everything, while I lay on my back and crawl underneath. I have my mirror, I ask for a flash light, he hands one to me straight away while saying nothing and standing out of the way. We like. Now for second test drive. It had stopped raining and told the guy we want to go for a least 12 miles. No problem. Wife drives, go for a bit then she turns out on the 4 lane and hammers it....hard. She takes it to 85mph then lets out, coasts back down to the speed limit. She has had professional lessons and is a very good driver. Of course the salesman doesn't know this. When the speed was climbing like a rocket I heard him buckle his seat belt ( he was in the back) I started to laugh out loud!! He was a good sport. This thing hauls *ss like no other SUV I have ever driven. Get back, no issues, looks great, like the new sales guy - we close the deal. Now we drive away all happy and proud new owners. We get maybe 20 miles the check engine light comes on. S**t!! I say!! Really?? Then notice on the way home (another @25 miles) that there is a whining noise from the rear diff under slight accel between 65-70mph starting to develop. Get home .................hook my scan tool up.......................code is for failed/failing cat converters. Now we are back to being pissed. I wait to call until Sunday morn to calm down enough to be rational. Same (new) sales guy answered. I told him what was going on, that we were again very unhappy, like........ we ready to get our money back. he said bring it in and he will have a loaner ready. So we drive back, wasn't there 10 min. Again met at the door with new sales guys AND sales manager who point to a new jeep for us to drive while the other is being fixed. Washed and ready to go We fill out a night drop envelope, said that the cats have failed, want new ones. Rear diff gear noise (pinion) was not going to go away with an oil change and was unacceptable. Also two of the panel switches illumination lights were out - need replacing. Service writer/counter guy calls me last night says that they have confirmed all issues and will install new cats, a complete new rear diff assy;axle to axle and the two switches all from Jeep. That after the repair they would fill the tank and detail it as well...............................no charge. I about fell off of the couch.........................................

Sounds like they tried hard to rectify their initial fumble.
Hopefully you will get a great vehicle when all is said and done. Obviously, the differential and cat converters are under Jeep factory warranty and will be done by a Jeep dealer. If they're taking care of the two switches as well, they're stepping up All good signs

As far as I know, only the cats are dealer/factory warranty. The complete diff - all on Carmax - I also told the service guy If all went well with his side, no probs, and I was happy at the end I would personaly write a recc letter for him and tech who is doing the work and also a little 'green in the hand' tip.
That I expected quality workmanship and that was more important to me than a deadline. I said Carmax is providing me with another Jeep, do NOT rush the work, I'm ok with it knowing that most Jeep dealers do not have cats and complete rear diff assy just sitting on the shelf in far-away land. Be carefull with it please.

Just like anything else.................there are way more good ones than not. We have wanted one since the first model came out. We've had several Jeep GC's and have really good luck with them. I rarely see late model GC's in my shop with stupid issues like the other Detriot offeings.
Did consider a Cayenne..............$3k for brakes? naw more than a 911 .......a X5? naw....... most have trans trouble with mileage approaching 130-150k + the main cooling transfer pipe is prone to leakage @100k and requires MAJOR work to fix

Still at Carmax service - they initially ordered a complete diff from jeep - then to find out no one was available in reasonable time frame - then alt was to completely overhaul unit - last part came in this morning.
If all goes well - they will have the local jeep dealer do the cats/pipe the first part of next week ET of completion as of now is next Wed - we'll see...................

So our 'new' Jeep is supposed to be ready for pick up this afternoon - Carmax had to send it over to the local Jeep dealer for additional warranty work. We'll see. They have had the veh for 3 D*mn weeks -
