F.A. PORSCHE's passing - any effect on 911's price?

Not sure if you guys remember what happened when Enzo Ferrari passed away, that was some 25 years ago! Almost overnight prices for vintage Ferraris skyrocketed. Fast forward to 2012... Ferdinand Alexander Porsche appears to have done the same thing!

I've been monitoring prices on eBay and other sites and it looks like 1st generation 911s have in fact appreciated by 10%, in some cases 15%. While not exactly a redo of what happened in 1988, I think we're off to a good start.

Just last month a last of the line 3.2 cost well under $20,000... more like $18,000 for a well sorted example. Today I found 4 examples on eBay, each with a starting price of $25,000.

Coincidence?

Look to see what they actually sell for. Asking prices are not a good market indicator, actual purchase prices are. If they're selling at those higher asks then there's your trend indicator.

How about the distant cousin the Boxster? Who designed it? And will this stop the slide of its value because of the loss of the big boss?

I would have to say as stupid as things are, yes, there will be a temporary yet slight increase. I don't think Porsche was as connected to every day operations as Enzo was. Somehow I think people didn't think there would ever be a decent Ferrari produced post Enzo's tenure.

I'm sure we know that was not the case and certainly won't be the case for the 911.

However, some would argue the 911 already died in '98.

Funny thought: I wonder what would happen if Luca di Montezemolo took over Porsche.

The Boxster and the 996 are identical to the bulkhead behind the Boxster seats. They each use a different nose, but they too are interchangeable. Really, not much of a cousin but more of a sister. Just different junk in the trunk.

What I was thinking is that 100 or so people will react thinking, "I've been wanting one of these, I think I'll go look." So, for a moment in time, the spot market will go up.

If Weissach burned down today, people would think that all special edition 911s will be more valuable. They would think gee, no more. Well, there won't be any more SE Carrera 3.2s anyway. That was then.

Tell that to the proletariat. You'll find someone who'll bite.

The man left his interest in Porsche back in 1971, right?

I think the prices have stabilized by now.

Might want to stock up on those Porsche Design lighters though. I compared, and for half the money ended up with a Lotus dual torch and flame butane number serving both pipe and cigars.

I predict the prices of early 911's will continue to appreciate in value...

"I think people didn't think there would ever be a decent Ferrari produced "
Just met another Ferrari owner last evening. He does not like the car. 308 GTS. Every Ferrari owner I know wishes they had not bought it. Maintenance nightmares. Poor quality.
If you are a status symbol type go right ahead, you deserve the outcome.
I will admit they are nice to look at.
Want a nice Ferrari? Get an Acura NSX..that's what the people from Ferrarichat.com told me.

Don't quote me without using the entire quote. I said after Enzo and I don't care what Fiat did.

Actually, I feel that production Ferrari's got much better Post Enzo, however Enzo always wanted "special" cars, his interest was the racing. These passionate "special" racing cars, are what got people into the brand. The only three important parts of the production cars for Enzo, was that they funded the race car, that they looked the best, and that they sounded excellent. If you wanted anything else, look elseware.

Modern Ferrari's have "improved". They are much much "better" cars, but I feel a lot of them won't stand the test of time into classic status.

As for Porsches, a key element has been their practicality, the 356 changed from being mid engined, to rear engined, to enable more cabin space, giving it back small back seats. Unlike Ferrari, I do not feel the modern generation Porsche's have lost base with their roots. Porsches, both old, and new are soulless machines, but yet, you can fall in love with them anyway. Enzo's Ferrari's seem to be alive, but will frustrate the day lights out of you if you can't put up with the crap they throw at you.

Because of the lack of soul that *most* Porsches built have, I do not see how the son of the founder of Porsche passing away, is going to make a huge impact on the price of the cars. The few special Porsche's will still appreciate faster, and there will always be some desirability for the less special. As age takes its toll on #'s on the road, this will result in a shrinking supply, so eventually, each model of Porsche, will bottom out in price, then steadily start to climb.

Was a decent Ferrari produced while he was alive ?

I guess we'll see in a few months.

BE911SC is right though. Check on the actual numbers that they sell for, not the asking prices.

What else is expected? It's nothing new since the beginning of Ferrari. 90% of those owners don't work on them and rather take them to an indi or dealer.

Changing a timing belt on a 308 GTS is easy compared to some servicing of a new Ford, GM whatever. Whiners... just the type of guys I like to buy their cars from.

My fearless prediction....

of Ferd's passing is for the value of air cooled 911's to go up. Some owners will realize this and drive their's less and less for fear of depreciation, dings, accidents etc. Their cars will get eartagged garage queens. The consequence of this some may get sold for a profit. Buy two Boxsters for the price of an air cool 911! Or sell your 911 , buy a Box and pocket the cash. There's a deal you can't refuse. Better than letting it collect dust in a garage. In the meantime my Boxster will go up in value because of increased demand.Barrett Jackson anyone?
