No recording really captures the sound. I feel the sound of a good engine as much as I hear it.
My partial list:
A 356 engine with enough cam to make the exhaust sound crack a bit.
The Matra GP car of the early 70s - OMG!!
An American V8 with a Carter AFB on top. The combination of the AFB ringing and the exhaust note - ahhh.
911 flat six
A multi-turboed tractor pulling diesel
An F-15 doing a mach .9 flyover

WORST EXHAUST SOUNDS
My neighbor's F*&#ing lawnmower

The Top Gear reviews of the Pagani Zonda F and Carrera GT both do a great job of capturing the sound of the cars, good stuff. Nothing pisses me off more than your typical auto show that dubs corny music over the driving clips (Autoweek sucks), totally hiding any hint of intake and exhaust noise.

Not sure who said that, but I believe it's true.

I was going to post this video. It's pretty much aural sex.

There are lots of great sounding engines out there, just like women.

nice, but nothing compares to the sound of a 4cam under power:

there's an even better one I saw a few months ago on youtube, where the owner is flogging a 4cam on a country road.

I was out today, a Subaru pulled up next to me. This car had one of the nicest sounding exhaust I've ever heard. it wasnt your typical ricer fart can. I wanted to catch the guy just to find out what exhaust he had on it. never heard anything like it.

something about a V 12 motor, Ferrari, maybe Jaguar or Aston,

V-10 motor just sounds wrong to me, almost like a harley v twin sounds wrong, just not nearly as bad.

I like the sound of boxer motors six cylinder is better than four, twelve sounds pretty good laying flat like that too

I appreciate it's editted, and at times speeded up (it was the 80's afterall), but the lambo at the start of cannonball run always sounded great to me. This car is on my list of must own's just for this reason alone.

x2, love that video.

My old vfr750 had a great note ~10k. Next to that, an SC w/ SSI's works for me.

A few years ago at Meadowbrook's Concours d'Elegance I heard a early 1960's long hood, long exhaust piped 12 cylinder Ferrari charging down the drive with quite the presence. I'll remember that moment for a long time, cannot get that sound with a mid-engined car.
