Double M.,

Talk about small miracles....

Sorry to hear about the vacation fail but it sounds like it was for the best. We lost our rescue schnauzer while we were out of town at my wife’s mother’s funeral services, so I know how you would have felt. Glad he is in the mend and your monitoring the little guy.

Great beach pic of the crew. Keep us updated

Sunday night our senior rescue beagle, Jack, woke up screaming bloody murder and limping around like his left front leg was broken. Didn't know what was going on. Suddenly he was fine. Cramp? Pinched nerve? Nightmare? He got back in bed and went to sleep.

30 minutes later the same thing happened. Now we noticed a head tilt and circling. Stroke?!

We ran him down to the local after-hours pet ER. He was back to normal but they did blood work. No problem. She starts pointing at things on an X-ray of his body cavity, saying words like "tumors," "cancer" and "euthanize."

What?!

We left him in their care for overnight monitoring, fluids and further x-rays until they closed at 7am and the only local internal medicine specialist/oncologist opened up (in the same building) so he could do an ultrasound. If we slept at all that night, we were having nightmares about it.

The next morning the specialist walks in and was like, "nah, he doesn't have cancer, he's got a slipped disc in his neck." What?!

He also discovered (by chance, via the x-ray) that he has Pneumothorax (small hole or leak in a lung lobe.) He isn't showing any symptoms so we're just going to keep an eye on him for now. He may require surgery down the road if it gets worse.

Here is the kicker. We were supposed to leave Friday morning to go to Colorado for a week (Cayenne Turbo and an Airstream, realizing a dream.) Turns out, if we had taken Jack up Pikes Peak like we planned, his lung would've collapsed!!

Providence? I'm almost grateful for the slipped disc now, which we are managing with medication. We completely cancelled our trip. Pretty bummed about our fall vacation falling to pieces but our (four-legged) kids are more important.

Love those pics!

Good luck Jack....woof!

We left the charger for Bosco's electric collar at my wife's cousin's house near Atlanta when we evacuated there for Dorian. She just mailed it to us USPS Priority Express. $38.70!!! We could have bought a new one with free shipping from Amazon fo $20. Wonder why the post office is in trouble.

ckelly78z 09-09-2019 03:35 AM

I don't understand how the post office charged that much to send, when using thier own boxes is a fraction of that cost.

I'm assuming it was the "express" shipping that caused it to cost so much. Just regular priority would have been cheaper. Also, using one of their "flat rate" boxes or envelopes also would have been cheaper.

porsche tech 09-09-2019 07:03 AM

Probably right. Either way we still owe the cousin $40! Stupid me, left it laying on the kitchen counter because I thought we weren't going home until the next day. Then mama agreed to return home that day.

One of the larger seizures of dogs ... 350 dogs! from a puppy mill in Tampa. Same mill that had 450 dogs seized in 2011  Up to 30 dogs living in cages designed for 2. Luckily, these are all small dogs that will be somewhat easier to adopt out.

This nutjob was prohibited from owning dogs in 2011 and needs to be jailed for a while.

Absolutely. I'd be happy to hear about jail time.

Had a little excitement at the homestead today.

I have two large dogs, 95# Staffie looking guy, Bodhi. 140# great dane/dutch shepherd thing, Riley, 5 and 2 years old respectively. Today my wife was watching TV in the bedroom. Hears some woman hollering outside, like near the gate to the back yard. We have a wrought iron fence, works fine for keeping big dogs in, but apparently does not keep a 3 month old Jack Russell puppy out. She goes out back, dogs are barking at the lady, and playing with this puppy, doing the play bow routine, getting the little dog to chase them. They are all wagging their tails, well the woman is not, she is freaking out.

OMG, it is a pit bull, he will kill my dog. Heather is telling the lady to settle down and STFU, not helping. Be quiet, we let them play a little bit. The brown one is not going to kill your dog, look at him, he is wagging his whole body and protecting your dog from the striped dog, pushing him away. Because your dog is a puppy. That is not a dog, it is a horse. Just be quiet

When they have a chance to run around a little, I will tell my dogs to sit, after they sit down, I will go get your puppy and carry him back here to you. If I try to grab him while they are playing, they might not react well. Just calm down. They play a little. She sits the dogs down, gets the puppy, and brings it over to the woman.

Woman has this crappy, cute collar for the pup, no idea that you are not supposed to let a puppy go around other dogs until after they have had all their shots. Gives her a decent collar, tells her how to fit it so it won't slip off. Woman was pretty clueless. She must have just gotten that dog, have not seen her walking around.

Gotta love stupid people.

Tobra's story reminds me of the white GSD that our family had while I was growing up.

We had a rabbit that we had in a big enclosure in the back yard. One evening the rabbit found his way out of the cage and the dog chased it around the back yard until she had apparently exhausted the poor rabbit.
My sister had returned home after her date and finds the dog with a bleeding rabbit (rabbit had ripped out a claw or two trying to escape) between her paws. Loud scream wakes up the whole household and probably the neighbors too. My dad goes to retrieve what is believed to be a dead rabbit and found it quite alive. The dog had licked the rabbit clean and was just laying with it.

Neighbor across the street has a young dog. Earlier this week I hear a commotion. A fella who walks his very calm lab around here routinely was on the sidewalk going by the house when the young dog apparently ran out - no leash - and the neighbor had to go "get him". The neighbor of course (still didn't have a leash) dragging his young dog away holding him off the ground by the collar.

What an idiot.

The world is full of stupid people. And pets often seem to bring out the stupid.

I thought Finn was the human and Jake was the dog

Wife recounting story from the other day is most amusing, woman is talking to someone on the phone and her little 3 month old puppy gets loose and into our back yard.

Apparently we have a pit bull and a wolf horse, the former was licking the puppy and keeping the wolf horse dog from getting too close to the pup. Woman was crying, wolf horse was standing up on the wrought iron fence and trying to lick her face. Woman got mad at my wife for laughing, but her telling me about it made me laugh.

In the pic above with cattle - that appears to a Brahma young steer or bull. They are not something to be messed with, very uneasy and skittish.
