Just got this guy a week or two ago. He had belonged to my office manager's neighbors, who neglected him pretty badly. I bet he has not seen two dozen people in his entire life. When we picked him up, his fur was sort of weird. He is not a year old, and he looked like he was going grey. Stripe down his back, and on both sides. Really brittle fur, like straw, rough to the touch. His previous owner said that was his "puppy hair" which I have never heard of before. Wife took him to the vet to get checked out. Vet says his gums are too pale, maybe he is a little anemic. Check him for worms, and he has them worse than the vet has seen before, and she is no kid. Said the sample was more eggs and worms than feces, with every type of worm there is. I had no idea there were numerous types. She said that judging by the way the worms looked, he had been infested at least two years, which is a neat trick for a 10 month old dog. My wife had them get a blood sample, which the vet did not feel was necessary, because he really looked pretty good overall. Called later and said to bring him back because he needed a blood transfusion, he was so anemic. We did not do that, but dewormed him, and have been giving him iron supplement every other day. He looks a lot better now, and seems to be getting along with the 15 year old dog pretty well. She has had to straighten him out a few times, but he is doing better. Better on a leash now, really sweet natured already. Vet said he would have died in about a month if he had stayed where he was before we got him.

Good job Tobra!

Follow your vets recommendation - you'll probably have to deworm him a couple of times to clean out the infestation. I had a greyhound that I picked up through a rescue group with the tell tale rough/brittle/sunburned looking coat. Wormy beyond belief... Popped a smooth fresh coat after the worming and was a beautiful dog.

The good job was my office manager working on them for a month or so to give the dog up to a good home.

Only problem with that dog is it is sort of like taking a horse that likes to chase squirrels for a walk, easier now with a good harness on him. That and his tongue is about the size of a beach towel.

but I stroll 3 big ones at once..
and their off leash whenever possible..

In this pic, you can see the grey looking hair on his side, mostly gone after a few weeks of no worms, decent food and iron supplements every other day. Mostly all dark brown now, still has it on his tail though.

Zuzu joined our family 2 weeks ago. 5 month old St. Bernard with a truly sweet disposition. Due to a truly despicable breeder we got her through Parvovirus, worms and fleas...nice, eh? Yet we paid for perfection...but ultimately that's now what we've got. Looking forward to many years with this girl. She has big shoes to fill.

Congrats on Zuzu, Mike....SB's are usually a very mellow breed - but they can have their moments! Hope she recovers 100% very soon.

My first Aussie, Murphy(m.h.r.i.p) totally knew what a camera was. I would pull out the camera for a pic and I would swear he would suddenly sit up straight and puff out his chest the give me the "this is my best side" pose.

Texas Man Built A Train To Drive Rescued Dogs Around

There are awful people out there who decide to abandon dogs and leave them to starve, and then there are people like Eugene Bostick, a man who not only rescues abandoned dogs, but carts them around in a homemade train every day.

Bostick, an 80-year-old retiree from Fort Worth, Texas, has owned a farm with his brother Corky since the '40s, and he reveals that people leave their dogs to die on his land sometimes.

"We live down on a dead-end street, where me and my brother have a horse barn. People sometimes come by and dump dogs out here, leaving them to starve. So, we started feeding them, letting them in, taking them to the vet to get them spayed and neutered. We made a place for them to live."

As if rescuing dogs wasn't good enough, Bostick thought it would be a fun idea to not only build a train, but to drive these lovable dogs around for the whole neighborhood to see.

"One day I was out and I seen this guy with a tractor who attached these carts to pull rocks. I thought, 'Dang, that would do for a dog train,'" Bostick recalls. "I'm a pretty good welder, so I took these plastic barrels with holes cut in them, and put wheels under them and tied them together."

Bostick plans to do this as long as possible, or until I can take over and make it my full-time job.

"I'm getting up in age. I'm 80 now, so I suppose it can't last too much longer, but I'll keep it going as long as I can. The dogs have a great time. They just really enjoy it."
