Fidget is a 'she'. We think part heeler, sending for a DNA test out of curiosity. She wants to herd.

VINMAN 05-05-2022 05:34 PM

Damn. So sorry Baz. :( Breaks my heart seeing this. (must be dusty in here...)

It's never easy. I still have my moments after losing my Sydney, and its been a year and a half since I lost him.

Just told my boy, that he will live forever

Seahawk 05-06-2022 03:04 PM

So yesterday we were 400 feet from the garage, on the farm road, when Dottie veered into the ditch line. She is ahead of me, I am in the Ranger.

A little black critter and Dottie picks it up. I start yelling "drop and go" while I am leaving Dodge.

Skunkapotomous. A Baby.

Minor spray on her, very little on me. She got the skunk treatment and all is well.

From today:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1651874553.jpg

She is at the base of a tree that has an Osprey nest up high...rain coming across the Potomac. Raining hard now.

The herding instinct is strong in that breed! ;)

Thanks Vinny. I know Sydney will always remain in your heart. As all of our puppies do......

Absolutely, Baz...we don't even think twice, the cost of doing business. She is rounding into a very, very attentive, smart dog. She is also very kind to the old Jack Russell we have had for 11 years.

After 25 plus years here my wife has the skunk smell clean-up on dogs down to a science...a combination of stuff not harmful to the dogs but very effective on the fur.

Seahawk 05-11-2022 04:57 AM

Last one for the week, I promise.

We are at the 30 minute mark on her walk, my ride. This is the windiest place on the farm, at the tree line where the road is...natural venturi.

She likes to jump in the Ranger and sniff:

Skunk free!

She would have turned 17 this month. I raised her from an 8 week old puppy....

my dog can seemingly sense my mood. during a particularly challenging WebEx meeting, he would constantly come and check on me. usually he is at my feet. we have really gotten to know each other and i love him profoundly.

Nah, he's a dog. It's all good. Just don't let him give you any kisses in the near future.

Tobra 05-12-2022 08:50 AM

I keep baking soda, dish soap and a quart of peroxide at the house, in case of the dog gets skunkified.

Had a mystery, something was eating my pea plants, chewing them up and leaving the carcass. Caught one of the dogs in the act. They have been leaving the plants alone since I yelled at them, but will probably still eat the snap peas off the plant when they get ripe. I figure that it is probably pretty healthy, and I am only into the pea plants for about $3, so what the heck.

Seahawk 05-12-2022 03:10 PM

I lied, sort of. This is a picture from yesterday, Dottie in the barley and she chased out a muskrat and got nipped for her troubles:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1652392524.jpg

Muskrat gives me the hairy eyeball as he heads back into the marsh.

Cassie, our Red Heeler that passed away last year, would have Captain & Tennille'd that muskrat...Dottie seems to want to make friends.

Then, today, I am parked enjoying the breeze, when Dottie sees this on the farm next to mine:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1652392928.jpg

She gets within five feet; the skunk is completely in a GAS mode and I get Dottie back to the Ranger before Peppy goes chemical.

I don't shoot anything on the farm but ground hogs so, while I am always armed on my circuits (think rabid animals) I rarely engage.

The Muskrat may need a .22 attitude adjustment, however. MF'er looked me right in the grill.

Cool story. Is a Belgian Malinois "tougher" than a GSD? I believe they are preferred for police work. Either way, impressive.

Border collie gets out and herds them up on the porch, reminded me of my mom's old dog, herded the neighbor's goats at my sister's house

Sadly, my friend in NC lost her boy Jake. Her daughter in the photos below. Jake was born the same year as my Winkipop and both died this year. 17 year run for both. Jake lost his eyes a while back - some here may remember my posts. Run free "No Worries Jake"......

Bye Jake….

These guys are now 11. T Booker the Heeler can no longer jump up to the bed. He stands there with a sad look until a boost is offered. Bring out the frisbee though and he comes alive. Time is fleeting.

Steps or a little bench at the foot of the bed helps with the dog getting up

Is this the face of a killer?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1654989341.jpg

The neighbors have chickens. They also have a really old, dilapidated fence, and a dog that will occasionally knock a board loose. It doesn't leave a hole big enough for him to get through, but apparently the chickens fit. A few of them got into our yard, but I didn't see them and let the dog out. I heard some squawking, ran out and got the dog, but not before she must have got to one of them. She hurt it, but didn't kill it, the neighbor kids came over and gathered the rest of them up, and I fixed the loose board on my side. The whole fence needs to be redone, but both of us have been ignoring it for years. Technically it's his fence, but it also keeps our dogs in our yard. I've considered just putting up a horse fence on this side of the yard, I did it on the other side when we got the second dog. I don't need the privacy, maybe they want it. The family that lived there before my neighbor put it up because he had a pool.

Beautiful pup that isn't (love the ears): Nature is what it is.

BTW, we have had chickens for years, laying hens and even the old Red Heeler that would kill anything that moved loved them. Barn cats as well. It is all about socialization.

From today:

When my 2 bigger dogs started having problems geting on the bed, I took it off the frame and put it on the floor. I tried the steps, but they didn't like them. Now they are happy to snooze on the bed like always.

On another note, Tilly is just shy of being 6 months. I took her to the vet today for a current weighing for heartworm and flea & tick meds. My neighbor has had our "dog car" for the last 2 weeks while her truck is getting repaired. So....Tilly got her first ride in the Porsche ! At first she was a bit tentative, riding on the floor. By the time we were coming home....she rode like a pro ! Its always nice to have a gorgeous blond riding in a sports car with you !

How about - "Damn these dogs are much more faithful to us humans than we deserve!"

How about don't go off and leave your companion behind.....
