Yes, established, heelers are the best dogs.

Some folks like their Heelers a little more bad ass. This one at Starbucks this morning has pit bull and I think she said Cane Corso in the mix. Cool looking, but didn't seem too approachable.

"Off proteins", ie not chicken or beef, are supposed to be better for them.

Check the ingredients list. The fewer the better. Dogs don't care if food is colorful and sparkly and shaped like dolphins.

Cow rawhide chews gum up their digestive system. I give mine about 2/day beef esophagus which he absolutely demands after walks. I get at Menards but a lot of stores here sell them. It's supposed to have chondroitin for the joints. https://www.cadetpet.com/all-products/cadet-beef-sticks-for-dogs-12-ounces
Also giving a bit more canned food to his dry 'cause he only got a few teefus left.

They might also like unsweet coconut water from Aldi (about a buck a can, not four bucks plus in most stores) It has potassium which is good for the muscles.

My piggy is 14-15yo, can't full run or jump up on the bed anymore this year, but otherwise I'm not seeing signs of him slowing down too much. Still stays at speed and can gallop to catch up when walking the trails. Hopefully I'll get a few more years out of him.

Such an iconic image, I had to look up the story behind "His Master's Voice." The dog's name was "Nipper."

Funny you should say that Bill because now I would never be owned by one that isn't!

Heck, I think my cat is even smarter than me though, so not really such a high bar....lol....

Sophie today on the job. 9 months now. A picture of at 2 months with my buddy John. At 2 months I was house training her with a treat when she peed on the lawn. I noticed that when she didn't have to go she would squat and fake it to get her treat. I always gave her the treat for being smarter than me

A very sweet looking dog there Steve.

There is a Springer on the morning walk called Wagg. She is always very lovely. Even if there is a rip roaring came of chase going on she always comes over to me to say hello and lean against me.

Christmas came early for the dogs this morning. 5 mice in the trap! a new record. I open the trap on the lawn and the pups take care of them fast. They never eat them, I rake the corpses into a zip lock after the onslaught

Seahawk 10-07-2024 10:49 AM

Perry is an almost 14 year-old Jack.

Gus is a 9/10 week old rescue kitten from a neighbor.

If this were a video, Perry would be blinking, "help me".

Bill Douglas 10-07-2024 11:47 AM

Springers

Steve,
You can't go wrong with a Springer! Great field dogs, smart, friendly and loving. Mr. Ben is my second one and he also loves riding in cars.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728327598.jpg

Steve Carlton 10-07-2024 12:51 PM

I'd love a Springer, but I've got two dogs too many right now and I don't think I have the energy for one. This is my co-worker's girl, Montana. She's a natural hunter.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728330596.jpg

I saw an old truck by the roadside on a motorcycle ride and pulled over for a photo. This Springer came out and posed for me.

For your info guys. I've just heard of the second dog to have died from eating corn cob.

Seahawk 10-08-2024 07:16 AM

Well, I just experienced a first after almost 30 years on the farm.

I get up fairly early and let Dottie out at sunrise. She has a morning routine that includes a tour of the Potomac and our marsh.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728396238.jpg

The entrance to the marsh is too the left of this tree with the Loon.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728396238.jpg

My home office looks out on the rear of the farm...Frank the cat approves:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1728396501.jpg

So, first cup of coffee, checking admin creep when I see Dottie run across the lawn...being chased by an Otter! I wish I had gotten some pics but it stunned me a bit.

I got up and went to the garage to see what was going on. The Otter and Dottie were in the garage running around. I get Dottie in the house and through the glass door to the garage, can see the Otter as it sniffs the door jam.

No sign of distress, rabies, etc...first time I have seen an Otter up close on the farm, the size of a large cat. I close the wooden door and check D for cuts, bites, etc. Nothing.

Whew.

Back to my desk and the Otter is no where to be found. I just got back from feeding the horses and we walked up. No Otter.

Just so odd. Also, two days ago I am on my drive about with Dottie...I drive the Ranger and stop frequently so the tour generally lasts over an hour. I am playing a game on my iPhone when the biggest, whitest Skunk walks right by me, stops, looks, and continues on his merry way.
