That's a great pic there, Bob. They love their little beds, don't they? :)

When my neighbor got a new bird dog last month, Dexter ran away from home and spends most of his time with me.

You're a lucky foster and he's a cutie.

I'm not saying this is your situation, but that reminded me of an experience from 10-15 years ago.

A family a few doors down from us got a German Shepherd puppy. It was an adorable dog. One day we were working in the back yard, and had the front and back doors of the house open to walk stuff through the house. I walked into the back yard, put my load down and turned around and there the pup was. He had followed me into the back yard. He just wanted to play.

A couple of weeks later, I heard the father coming down the block yelling "come, get your butt back here you stupid dog, etc...." Irritated me quite a bit.

THen a couple of weeks after that, the older daughter that i think was 13-14 came running down the block chasing after the dog sounding like her father yelling at the dog. It wouldn't come to either one of them, but it ran right up to me, and sat down looking up at me. I swear it if it could have spoken it would have said "help, save me from these morons."

Masraum - Thanks, enjoyed your story. I guess I have some questions about the diet for a little dog like this. He has adapted me, spends the night, hops in the car, put him out and he chases me down the road when I leave. I was concerned he wasn't going home to eat, so started feeding him table scraps. Seemed like the little guy was gaining weight.

Talked to the owner. He has a new bird dog that gets all the attention. Family is gone a lot as they own a bakery and he's a fire fighter in a town 100 miles away. Owner doesn't want me to feed "Dexter". Sez he gives him dry food once a day. Claims Dexter comes home to eat and right back to my house. I did some reading and looks like recommended feeding is 1/2 to one cup a day broken into two meals.

Question: Should I get him some dry food and put out? I guess human food is not recommended? I'm new at all of this.

Hey Bob....FWIW I give my girls two feedings per day. They get 1/2 cup of dry food (kibble) each feeding.

Sometimes I supplement with Pink Salmon in a can (Bumblebee) - Wild Caught Tunafish in a can (oil) - and raw chicken necks.

They do mooch a few puffs of popcorn from me on occasion or I will give them some veggies while I am prepping in the kitchen or sometimes a piece of meat but those are not routine - just occasional.

They also get a dog biscuit each morning when I leave the house. They have their human trained don't they? :)

Good luck with little Dexter!

Bob,

I’m in a similar situation, so I started volunteering with a rescue and will sit dogs for other fosters on occasion to get a dog fix! Had some fun times with puppies without the commitment.

The rescue I volunteer for had a chocolate lab puppy arriving Saturday night and no one else had offered to foster her and I happened to have had taken this week off from work to do so projects around the house.

She’s a cute one and doesn’t seem too “chompy”.

I could never do that. I would end up with 100 dogs.

Note that the large, 85# dog is laying down
