Before:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372550680.jpg

Doc called us in the middle of the procedure to say he didn't recommend closing over the tumor residuals. He was afraid that it would grow back fast enough to prevent the good lip/chin tissue from healing. So we took a deep breath, and said okay to removing the front part of the jaw, just behind the lower incisors. Chip has bounced back remarkably fast, this photo is from last Sunday - 4 days post-op

After:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1373765571.jpg

We were never too concerned about cosmetics - he's a goofy looking mutt anyway. That being said, from most angles you'd never know. He was back on soft food one day post-op and functionality is very good. Can't pick things off the floor, might not ever. But personality-wise, he seems pretty much the same great dog - just minus the stinking, infected tumor. Of course, we've traded that for incredible piles of drool - but I like the dog more than I like a clean floor. (BTW, new dark cherry wood floors - big fail)

When he was diagnosed last February (yes, 2012), the curative procedure was to remove most/all of the lower jaw. That made no sense in terms of an uncertain and potentially short survival. I'm really glad we made that decision then. Now it seems the original cancer is not growing and has not spread. So who knows how long - but if it gives him a longer run free of the tumor, then it's a win-win. Tough decisions, we really love this dog, and love him enough to know when not to hang on.

You are a fine man to take care of your pup.

Thanks for the update, Don.

I wish all dogs owned such great human advocates as yours does. :D

So happy to hear things are going well for Chip.

Please give him a big hug [or ten] from my girls. ;)

Best wishes for continued health and recovery. SmileWavy

We had to put Deuce down yesterday. He was 9 and went downhill quickly over the last few months. He was man's best friend for sure. Our other AmStaff won't eat, she is besides herself w/o him. Tonight we have to tell the kids and it's going to be really hard. We're going to miss all 100 pounds of sweet hard-headed self.

Beautiful pup.

Man, that sucks...it always does. I really feel for you and your family. I wish we could all be born with a dog that would live beside us all our lives...that would be perfect. (I think Charlie Brown said that first and it's pure wisdom)

Very difficult deal, we recently went through a similar loss...................our best to you Janet

Baz 07-16-2013 12:31 PM

I'm very sorry for your loss, Janet.

"Deuce" looks like he was a wonderful companion. Look at those eyes....oh my!

9 years is too short....R.I.P. "Deuce".

Thanks, everyone. We got him right before our wedding in 2004 and he was the most gentle giant. Everyone he came in contact with loved him instantly. I was looking at a picture I have on Facebook of my oldest son, who was 2 at the time, sitting on his back sleeping, deuce was asleep too. It doesn't get much cuter.

Dog pictured floating to sleep in owner's arms has died

Laura T. Coffey TODAY
July 18, 2013 at 8:20 PM ET

http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/streams/...top_medium.jpg
John Unger and his dog Schoep used to float anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the temperature of the water and how Schoep was feeling.

Schoep, the arthritic dog who became an Internet sensation last summer when he was photographed floating peacefully in Lake Superior in his owner’s arms, has passed away.

The 20-year-old dog’s owner, John Unger, announced the death of his best friend on Facebook on Thursday evening.

“I Breathe But I Can't Catch My Breath...” Unger wrote. “Schoep passed yesterday. More information in the days ahead.”

The bond between Schoep and Unger captivated tens of thousands of animal lovers when their photo and story began circulating nearly a year ago. Last July, Unger feared that he was mere days from needing to put then-19-year-old Schoep down. In anticipation of his loss, he asked a friend to take one last photo of them together.

In loving arms: Man floats his sick dog to sleep, becomes Internet sensation

That friend, photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, met them at Lake Superior, where Unger liked to help Schoep float to take pressure off his arthritic joints. She captured a photo of the two of them in the lake and posted it on her Facebook page on Aug. 1.

That image ricocheted around the world and resulted in an outpouring of online donations and support. The help Unger received allowed him to afford treatments to alleviate his dog’s condition.

John Unger always wanted Schoep to experience everything, so he brought him everywhere he went. They regularly took three walks a day.

“As best as I can guess, the treatments have turned back the clock on his life about a year-and-a-half to two years,” Unger told TODAY.com in September 2012. “I’ve taken him for walks on trails that we haven’t been on in three years. He’s not dragging his back legs like he was before. To be able to do that again with him, words can’t even describe the feeling.”

Happy tail: How the Internet changed 'floating dog's' life

Just this Monday, Unger posted a happy update about Schoep on Facebook along with a photo of the shepherd mix falling asleep in the sunshine, surrounded by bright yellow flowers:

“A fantastic day we had. Up early to walk and go to the beach, eat, nap, go shopping, eat, laundry, go to the beach, eat, nap and one more walk. All without the humidity, that’s what made it fantastic — especially for Schoep!”

Stonehouse Hudson, the photographer who made Schoep and Unger famous, posted this on her Facebook page on Thursday night:

“RIP Schoep. He had an amazing life and touched us all. Please keep John in your thoughts.”

Always loved that one.

Liked this one also.

GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"

When the Border Collie died a few years back, the Kelpie/Heeler cross was so out of sync. When they walked, it was in lockstep. The BC was so aware of the surroundings the K/H never paid much attention to anything except the smells that she encountered. After he had passed she had a very difficult time making the adjustment to only dog status. She would cower when a bird flew overhead for the first couple of weeks. Eventually she adjusted and was fine until spleen cancer took her out as well. Two dogs in two years. Sucks...

Sorry for your loss Jferr...

So yesterday Daisy gets a present from my neighbors son. He is a great kid but already he sees the world from a very unique view. But he just got some "tooth" fairy money. So what does he do, he goes out and buys my dog Daisy a toy. What a HUGE heart he has.

In her younger days the kids on the block knick named her "Crazy" Daisy.
