G'day!
|
Here's a touching eulogy from a friend of mine who lost his best friend today:
“Pete, my angel, my perimeter guard, my exuberant floppy-eared goofball, my picky picky eater, my head-burying love-on-me little man, my fierce bear dog... I had as a good a day today as I possibly could for you. I rode my bike slowly and enjoyed the smells on the wind and the sun. I rolled on my back in the grass where nobody could see me water them with my tears. I ate good food and took time to appreciate it. At every single moment, you were with me. You still are, and always will be. I will miss you. Terribly. You have a GIANT perimeter to patrol now... keep all those that went before you safe. Goodbye, my beautiful Pete.”

Our Red Heeler, who has been with us of 16 or her 17 years, died last night. She had a very steep decline. We knew it was coming and she was not in pain. The vet who has seen Cassie for over a decade said give her the pain pills, stay with her and if she makes it through the night we will put her down in the morning. My wife slept on the floor with her all night and Cassie passed peacefully around 3am. Very serene according to my wife. Those two were an incredible team. A very recent photo of Cassie from my wife's office. No real saddness, just thanks for 16 wonderful years. What a rocket ship she was.

Sorry Paul. Please convey my best to your wife along with my respect to her for staying with Cassie in her time of need.
I have no doubt, she had a most wonderful life, thanks to you both. --------------------- Near this Spot are deposited the Remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferosity, and all the virtues of Man without his Vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human Ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog who was born in Newfoundland May 1803 and died at Newstead November 18th 1808. When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth, Unknown to Glory but upheld by Birth, The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe, And storied urns record who rests below. When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen Not what he was, but what he should have been. But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend, The first to welcome, foremost to defend, Whose honest heart is still his Masters own, Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone, Unhonour'd falls, unnotic'd all his worth, Deny'd in heaven the Soul he held on earth. While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven, And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven. Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour, Debas'd by slavery, or corrupt by power, Who knows thee well, must quit thee with disgust, Degraded mass of animated dust! Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat, Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit, By nature vile, ennobled but by name, Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame. Ye! who behold perchance this simple urn, Pass on, it honours none you wish to mourn. To mark a friend's remains these stones arise; I never knew but one — and here he lies. ~Lord Byron

Our son's family picked up Franklin today. Franklin, meet everybody. Everybody, meet Franklin.
He will be their German Sheppard's yard mate. Liberty has been at a loss since Roxy and Jake passed last year. They were both rescue boxers. ![]() ![]() ![]() 🐾

Sorry for your family's loss Paul. A few weeks ago, we had a similar scenario play out and that cartoon really brought a tear to my eye.
Our 16 year old Dougal (West Highland Terrier) had been slowing down for a while. He was deaf, nearly blind and started to have trouble breathing so we decided it was his time. I took him down to the vet. They offered a few treatment options, but I could see that there was no real hope for improving his quality of life. It was a fairly easy decision to make and strangely felt like an honour and a privilege to help him on his way. I think I was more concerned for the poor young female vet who had to take care of him. ![]() We put our CNC plasma cutter to work and he now greets us near the back door as we come and go.
