Pennies are not considered legal tender, fyi. It is why they are "OK" to use when testing the sharpness of your shears, ok to use for lining your floors and bar-toppers and flatten in all sorts of souvenir penny-squishing machines.

Pennies are legal tender, fyi:
Title 31 (Money and Finance), Subtitle IV (Money), Chapter 51 (Coins and Currency), Subchapter I (Monetary System), Section 5103 (Legal Tender) of the United States Code states: United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues. Foreign gold or silver coins are not legal tender for debts. What this statute means, in the words of the United States Treasury, is that "[A]ll United States money . . . is a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal law mandating that a person or organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or Read more at snopes.com: Debt Payment in Pennies Also, from post #18: U.S. Title 18, Chapter 17, Section 331: Prohibits among other things, fraudulent alteration and mutilation of coins. This statue does not, however, prohibit the mutilation of coins if done without fraudulent intent if the mutilated coins are not used fraudulently.

Do all the heads have to line up the same way? Or do you alternate heads and tails?

Lining up all the heads so they point north on your 944 floor mats is gonna make autocrossing the thing (let alone driving it in anything other than a straight line) quite difficult, don't you think?

True, which they can do because (from previous post), "There is, however, no Federal law mandating that a person or organization must accept currency or coins as for payment..."

You flip each penny to decide; heads, it's tails up, tails, it's heads up.

I certainly hope the years were in a sequential progression and all coins pointing true North.

Seriously, how does that work. Does the bare surface of the coins hold up to foot wear, or after some years do you end up with patchy zinc (or whatever the coin base metal is) trails through the tarnished copper floor?
