wow! Raccoons are NOT rodents. In fact, humans are more closely related to rodents than are raccoons. They are no more filthy or disease carrying than other animals, including most of the humans in LA.

Ask a Cajun if they are good eating...

They must taste bad. The Cajuns I know will eat a Possum or squirrel but never a Coon.

We had most of our fish eaten by a Blue Hereon. We put up fishing line over the pond in a criss cross pattern. So far after 3 years the fish are still there.

It was a metaphor. I don't think they are rodents. You need to get used to me after what, 10 years?

Raccoons. They're what eat ours, here on the northern boundaries of Lost Angeles, in the foothills. They seem to be everywhere. And yeah, they tear hell out of our pond.

I've seen herons and racoons raiding fish ponds. More probably racoons. By the way, racoons are absolutely not rodents.

Well, it wasn't Toby. He was sleeping on my bed that particular evening and didn't move an inch. Sure he ate nine of my goldfish but hasn't eaten anymore since he became a pet cat.

A Raccoon will turn everything over getting to the fish. They get the fish in the front pond at my house, they used to get the backyard one but now it is too deep. They have eaten one of my turtles out back though.

Crustyhshief,

I was just told by someone to use this stuff call Shakeaway. Spray or sprinkle around and they will not come back. It might be coyote urine in this stuff. I am off to try and get some. Home Depot has it.

Forgot to tell you this. The same person to me to put a cinder block or two in the pond so the fishes has a place to hide. The block itself is too heavy for the raccoon to turn so they eventually give in and go away.

RACCOON FOR CROCKPOT
1 med. size raccoon
1/4 c. honey
1 c. chicken broth
3 tbsp. vinegar
3 tbsp. cream sherry
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
Clean raccoon, quarter, and remove all surface fat. Put pieces into crockpot. Mix all other ingredients and pour over meat pieces. Cover and cook 6 to 8 hours. Remove grease and discard before thickening remaining liquid for gravy. Meat will brown and be tender and delicious.

I tried that Shakeaway on the gophers in my back yard. It didn't have any coyote or bobcat pee in it. It had synthetic stuff (urea ?) in it that was supposed to "simulate predator urine" & didn't do anything. I seriously doubt it would have any affect on racoons. They're pretty smart & will figure it out in no time. If it works, let all of us know.

I hit one in the rear with a pellet rifle the other day. Didn't penetrate, but it got him to get out of the pond and go across the street to snack on cat food.

I think they have pretty tough skin. Years ago, I shot one from my upper deck when he as up on a tree. I got as close as 5-7 feet and nailed him with a new CO2 pistol pellet gun(bought it just for that). He looked at me and was laughing inside. Slowly, he climbed down the tree so I want after it with my trusty shovel.
