My mother had her's done at 82. She had fallen and broken the hip.
She was in bad health and didn't have a lot of mobility even before the fall. Before her surgery my attitude was that she's sick from multiple ailments, doesn't walk much anyway, what the heck does she need an expensive hip for? Turns out the major advantage of the hip replacement was that it relieved a lot of her pain even though she didn't use it to walk on much. Not having that pain for the last two years of her life made it worth it.

Right now it is between your dad and the surgeon, but if he waits he'll need a government death panel to decide.

My grandfather had his hip replaced several years before he died (COPD) and the surgery and subsequent recovery went well and was uneventful. Good luck with your father!

Dad went for pre-op and a class today to teach him what to expect during and after the surgery.
He is gung ho for the surgery. It's a tough call. I want him to be pain free, but I am terrified of the possibilities of complications. I had spinal surgery at 38 years old and almost died from pulmonary emboli post surgery.

Dad's off to surgery in the morning. He is so excited and the prospect of being mobile again.
All his pre-op testing came back great. All the docs think he'll do fine. He's very strong and determined. Go Pop!

Well Dad had the hip replacement surgery yesterday and as walking today, albeit with a walker.
He came through with flying colors and was flirting with the nurses and joking with the docs in the pre-op, OR and in recovery. The doc did an anterior method surgery going in from the front. They said the recovery is much quicker than the older method. He will probably be released in a few days and then into rehab for about 10 days or so. His attitude is very positive and he is thrilled that he did the surgery. He is looking forward to pain free days ahead. Thanks for all the well wishes, Mike

Best wishes to dad.
Sounds like he's well on his way to recovery.
