Oh yeah, I'm not saying facebook violates anyone's privacy; I'm saying that some people willingy spew absolutely everything about themselves on facebook. It -can- be used in a more discreet manner, I suppose.

The problem for Facebook long term is that as a public company, it's now a beast that needs to be fed, i.e., it needs to constantly have user and revenue growth and expansion, year after year.

It's a challenge because they don't really produce anything. Advertising revenue is fickle and they need to be careful with it, because it's viewed as a negative to most users.

Agree 100% that FB is problematic as a business model and it's also problematic from a user standpoint because their evil comes from trying to make it a viable business model and their constant secret tweaking of privacy settings, etc...

But from a user's standpoint, it's still pretty great for me. Where else am I gonna get all this?

All from the last 10 minutes on my feed...it seems that I'm the only person in L.A. who wasn't hanging out on the SAMCRO set last week:

Nice pictures like this:

ANd this little video from a childhood friend who just got off the plane in Florence and walked into this combination wine shop/opera house:

Like ads for online companies that sell replica Swiss watches? Those I find annoying.

I like FB, quite a bit.

I keep in touch with all my car buddies, band friends and locals.
I also follow several pro and amateur sports/motorsports teams.

Instagram seems to be the new favorite with a lot of the teenagers I know. Most all their conversations include a pic of some type.

Sorry I don't do any of that "social" stuff, I actually think it's bad for society, but that's another story not to mention exploiting your privacy, again another story. I have this thing I call a "telephone", if I feel like being social i pick it up and call a friend.

Reminds me of those Toyota comercials....and I've go no friends on facebook, ask me if I care

If you use Facebook, you're a willing participant.
That being said, the website tows the line in legality. "Bait and switch" might apply here.
Just like a few other companies, it tries to trap it's users into it's world, to use and manipulate their data and communications.

For your reading enjoyment:
1). FB intercepts and re-routes direct personal emails secretly through it's own servers: http://mashable.com/2012/06/25/facebook-email-address/

2). FB uses friends to sell you stuff: Facebook Must Allow Users To Back Out Of Personalized Ads [Class Action Settlement]

3). FB facial-recognition is spilling out on Main Street: We're watching: The camera that can recognise you from your Facebook picture every time you walk into a shop | Mail Online

4). FB tracks (i.e. "stalks") you on the web even after logging out: Facebook: Tracking Your Web Activity Even After You Log Out? | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

5). There's plenty more: Facebook Is Normalizing Creepy Behavior

Byron... Don't burst his bubble...

He wants to be on the "facebook is stupid" bandwagon....

Most peoples issue really isnt facebook, they just need better friends....

Instagram is 'picture sharing', with a little text caption. Facebook bought the company and it's (sort of) part of Facebook now.
