My wife and I have family and friends spread out all around the country. Facebook is how we keep up with each other.

I was on Faxcebook 3 years ago, then dropped off after 1 year. I started up again in September, after 2 years off of it and it's still just as lame as I remember. I have to have an account to download the videos of our church band each week...

There are web alternatives for large file storage/distribution such as dropbox and others.
Mass email mailings serve the same purpose as well, and also reduce peripheral discussion. You can probably set up group forwarding. |

There is no other web app or site that does what FB does.

Seriously - why anyone surfs without FireFox and AdBlock Plus is beyond me; I'm sure they have their reasons, and those reasons are probably wrong.

I am shocked at the number of ads on websites when I have to use an alternative browser for whatever reason that is not configured with an ad-blocking tool. Another great thing about Adblock plus is that you can block certain images from ever appearing on webpages, such as obnoxious signatures with huge pictures. Neil

Although I have no use for it myself, looks like Facebook can be useful. The guy who was stealing tools from me last week posted on his page that his kid was sick and he had to sell some of his tools to pay doctor bills. Turns out they were my tools. I"m not sure yet what will come of that because I can't prove they were mine (no serial numbers).
A couple of years ago one of our employees called in sick on a Friday, and posted on her facebook page that she and her husband left for a long weekend that morning. The next Monday we had fun sympathizing with her and gave her a get well card and everything. She finally confessed and gave up a vacation day, along with a chance at a raise. So if you're dumb enough you can hang yourself with Facebook.

I think maybe FB works best for big city people who are separated from family members for many years and have hundreds of friends and acquaintances from social and professional lives that they actually like.
That would be me. I moved from MN. to Los Angeles 30 years ago and I have 35 first cousins, (all grown with families of their own for most part), and I like nearly all of them. We spent a lot of time together growing up. I've also met so many people over the years that I really like but to stay in touch in the real world is not going to happen. FB is the perfect level of contact and I get to see what's going on with people, if I want to.

I joined Facebook to keep up with my bro-law and new new family - his daughter turned one this summer, and since they are on the other side of the country, Facebook at least helps us see how the family is doing. That and Apple's FaceTime are awesome for keeping in touch with them.
I just returned from Berlin, and while there, I was able to share my photos with my family and friends. In my opinion, THAT is what Facebook should be used for - it should be used for sharing something SIGNIFICANT with your family and friends -- not for sharing "what's for dinner" and expressing your political views ad nauseam. (Isn't that what PPOT and PARF are for??) I have found that by 'hiding' a couple of my friend's relentless posts about insignificant nothings, my facebook experience is much better. -Z-man

Years ago Ma Bell had a slogan that said "Long distance calling-the next best thing to being there". Today, most people think "call or visiting my friends, the next best thing to Facebooking them". Think of the people on the spaceship in the movie Wal-E. It seems like that's where humanity is headed.

I'm glad you made the choice to "register" your daily life, relationships, and social communications with the Federal Government and the corporate advertising infrastructure. Good for you for making a personal choice.
Please note: Your consumer profile may be bought and sold freely amongst companies, without you receiving a dime, and future prices obtained through web searches for goods and services may be influenced by your ability to pay. Because you are rich, own a Porsche, and boast on the internet about how much expensive crap you buy, your next plane ticket may be a few hundred dollars more. But you'll never even notice... |

I can't stop laughing over it. They are both wearing wigs and were unrecognizable to me at first. And they are close friends.
