LIPA the main power utility on Long Island is effing clueless...

I took this screen shot about 3 hours ago.... it mentions that "5 customers are Affected" in Long Beach, NY.... Long Beach is hammered I took a ride down there with my LEO bro

Allegedly according to the map in the background screen... I have power!

I just within the last 1/2 hour saw a power company utility truck conducting a survey of the powerlines in front of my house...

6 day and counting....

I have plenty of fuel for my itty bitty generator, and a wood stove cranking out the BTUs

A crew is has been on my street for the past few hours pulling new wire....So I went out and found an open Dunkin Donuts and brought the guys a box-o-joe and some donuts... They joked that everywhere they go they are being given coffe and donuts..

Also the crew working on my street is from Michigan...... I still have not seen one rep from LIPA in my neighborhood since this thing started

Thanks to all who have traveled so far to help out.

Its 44 deg out, I have my house at 67 deg my wood burning stove rocks! and my little Coleman generator keeps purring along..

Glad you are felling better today Tim .
Gotta be very stressful for all involved.
I can tell you that crews from all over Canada are down there.
Another bunch left Sat from Vancouver and they said from what they were told ,they will be down there for months.

This could be like a super slo-mo one-two punch if the Nor'easter has any grunt..

I finally mucked out my basement and tossed everything that was down there, when I notice my basement slab felt hollow...

So I sounded the slab with a broom handle and found an area that appear to be undermined, or washed out...the slab actually flexes a little (not sure how thick it is)

So called my insurance people and put in a claim to FEMA....Just hate to do that

Found fuel for my truck...I actually found a place with seperate diesel pumps ALA truck stop.... People were givinig me the evil eye when I was allowed to cut the line and get to the un-occupied diesel pumps.....

So Im good for another 500 miles before I have to run the gauntlet again....

BTW generators run well on 110 octane racing fuel ;-)

Already have us on standby for this nor'easter.

Drove thorought he damaged areas of Staten Island last night and this morning. Horrible. Near great kills harbor , where I used to keep my boat when i lived there, hundreds of boats sitting in the streets and also on top of some houses.

It infuriates me the way Cuomo and Bloomberg handled this compared to Gov Christie. They totally dropped the ball on this one. Staten Island has always been **** on by the city as it is. This really rubbed salt in the wounds.

Vin,
It is interesting that the news seems to show the same pics over and over. They have not gone out and gotten new updated pics of the devastation.

Widg, from what i seen, the response and coverage out here in Staten Island has been pretty pathetic. I got those pics online. I was in my company vehicle so, i didnt want to start snapping pictures. But yeah, everything has basically been unchanged from a week ago. They were starting to move some of the boats last night. Just had tow trucks dragging them down the road.
The people here are raging, and rightfully so. The media is more concerned with the gas line chaos and the other boros. In one of the armorys where national guard trops that are helping with the response are being housed, they pulled half of the troops out, so they can make room for some fashion show that is being held. WTF??? are you serious?? No effin way Gov Christie would let something like that happen.

Well, we made it through another one. Just got power, and internet back, after 10 days. Man, I'll never take running water for granted again, nor a toilet that flushes by flipping a lever versus pouring a bucket of water into the bowl. Yesterday's nor'easter was a flop here on the west side of the state, only some light snow last evening, and no big winds. We had no real damage from Sandy, save a shingle off the roof, and a large portion of the chestnut in our back yard laying in the neighbors back yard, but still attached to our tree.

I certainly feel lucky compared to those who lost everything to the storm, as I would rather be inconvenienced than homeless. I can't believe the pictures of devestation at the NJ shore, and my heart goes out to all those people.

I'll be on the phone with our electrician tomorrow about installing a whole house generator. I'm not going through this crap again.

If you are prone to flooding then get a large portable gen. We have a 15 kw installed and it's saved us many times.

Hey guys...thanks for the reports.....we are with you in spirit!!!

I saw in the news today Lady Gaga and Jerry Seinfeld are donating to the cause. LG is giving $1M and Seinfeld the proceeds from an upcoming Long Island gig he will be doing. That was pretty cool. I just hope ALL the money gets to those who need it!

Hey Vin.....my Dad grew up on Staten Island (at 79 East Raleigh Avenue). When we lived in Virginia we used to take trips up there to visit his parents (my grandparents) who still lived in the same house. Went to the zoo and the horse trails - this before the V.N. Bridge was built too. Took the S.I. ferry which was way cool, of course. Very sad to see the devastation and even worse about the area being neglected by the local government pinheads. Thanks for all you and your crew are doing...keep up the fight and hang in there, man!

The outpouring of donations is amazing. The day after Sandy, my CEO announced to us that my company will be donating 1 million to the Red Cross to help fund rescue and relief efforts. I know of another company that we use as vendors who pledged the same thing.

It is good to see big businesses doing the right thing!

Terrific and amazing how people can pull together in times of desperation. For those experiencing it, I suppose it makes one wonder how humble and calm the Japanese were that endured the tsunami / earthquake.

Other thought's:
Thinking of waterfront homeowners and this is not about those somewhat safely inland-

Out of respect for all those affected by this event, it's one thing if they could afford to take the hit and rebuild, either by their own fund's or insurance but what about the hardship cases?

Curious what percentage have no fund's, means or insurance. I have no problem with those in need getting the immediate handout's but why does some class rebuild on flood prone area's when they shouldn't be there in the first place? Donation's are fine but how many times might the taxpayer's foot a good chunk of rebuilding?

I've seen enough of this rebuilt handout's throughout the mid-west, over and over again. It remind's me of the Mississippi flood's and some area's were re-shaped but people refused to leave, got rebuilt homes either from donation / gov. programs. No longer the 10 year flood's folk's and the pain just cycles more often. There's homes built on swamp's and right on top of lake's all over the mid-west. $100k shack of material on $500k and up property so they can be on the water. Most skip the insurance because they can't afford it. Many of them get hit every Spring. It's one thing having the ability to afford rebuilding or flood insurance, but when I see the repeat's crying the blue's, I could care less.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to give the poor who lost their waterfront shack a check and relocate vs. rebuilding on the same property?

Thanks Baz. I know E. Raleigh. about 10 mins from where I lived. Before the bridge was built?? I didnt think you were that old.
The zoos still here. You probably went to Clove Lakes stables, which was right next to the zoo. That place burnt down in the 80's. Islands changed a bit since then. Now the place is an overcrowed dump. Its a shame. Massive overdevelopment.
