Thank you Marcus, we'll be ok, (knocking on wood as I type).

Barometer down to 996 and dropping quickly, winds howling. Trees down in a few surrounding towns already & we're 7 hours away from the hurricane, yikes.

Fourteen rescued from HMS Bounty in path of hurricane; two missing - chicagotribune.com

(Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard on Monday rescued 14 of the 16 crew who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty while in the path of Hurricane Sandy off North Carolina, using helicopters to lift them from life rafts, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard continued to search for the two missing crew members about 160 miles from the eye of the storm. Officials had previously reported 17 aboard but later revised the figure to 16.

The first of two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters arrived on scene at about 6:30 a.m. (1030 GMT) and hoisted five people to safety, and a second helicopter arrived and rescued nine people, the Coast Guard said.

A C-130 Hercules aircraft was searching for the two missing crew members and a third rescue helicopter was on its way, the Coast Guard said.

"The 16 people donned cold water survival suits and life jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," the Coast Guard said.

The tall ship was built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" and lost power while at sea on Sunday night.

The ship was on its way fromNew London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida, said Tracie Simonin, director of the Bounty. She said she was unsure how the captain attempted the navigate the storm.

"The last we heard the ship was still upright," Simonin said, providing some hope the vessel could still be saved.

The Bounty was about 90 miles southeast ofHatteras, North Carolina, or roughly 160 miles from the center of Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane bearing down on the U.S. East Coast, the Coast Guard said.

The three-mast, 180-foot (55-metre) vessel was believed to be taking on water and was without propulsion, stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and 18-foot (5.5-metre) seas, the Coast Guard said.

The original Bounty, a British transport vessel, gained infamy for a mutiny in Tahiti in 1789.

The 1962 movie starredMarlon Brando as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian. The replica Bounty has appeared in numerous documentaries and feature films including "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with Johnny Depp, according to the ship's website.

Pictures of the boat dock and a neighbors house at the end of my street at high tide this morning. This is the Rehoboth Bay, its inside the Inlet from the Atlantic ocean. I'm about 5-6 feet higher in elevation.

What would posses a captain to sail INTO a hurricane? I know very little about sailing, but hurricanes and storms are best to be avoided. A city is stuck with staying still, a boat can turn around and go the other way.

The Bounty must surely have modern GPS and navagiation equipment and communications. Hurricanes don't sneak up on anyone in this century.

WOW, geez my Chelsea barometer only goes down to 950. I don't like the sound of those winds that high. I'm at 995 now @ 11:32am. It is set for sea level. I'm about 475-490 above.

I've never seen numbers below 960
This storm is getting worse by the hour (if that is possible)
I'm afraid this will be life changing for many people.
No markets,No commerce, No subway,No power,No heat. Election postponed.
This is the unfortunate reality that people will be facing in the oncoming days and weeks.
Between Canada and the US over 100 million people will be effected.100 million.

NO EXCUSE for the cap'n of the bounty.................NONE! could have made port, anywhere before this. then to put the USCG at risk is just WRONG!

i will be very surprised if his "cap'n's license" is still intact after this BOOFOONARY!

damn damn lucky they survived 18ft seas and 40+knot winds.

how would ya like to be the PJ or the hoist guy or even the freeking pilot/co-pilot of that USCG helo! thats some MAJOR HUMONGUS HUEVOS on that rescue.

Love the Mutiny on the Bounty movies, all 3 were good. What a shame about the ship. Any word on the two missing sailors?

Just went down to the store to pick up a couple of cigars. Debris all over the roads. A city truck trying to clean a storm drain. Didn't even think about that. All the leaves clogging those things, creating more flooding.

For reference twobone...

As far as barometric pressure at landfall Katrina's pressure was 918 millibars which is third lowest for a landfalling hurricane in the Atlantic Basin. The 1935 Labor Day hurricane that hit the Florida Keys had a pressure of 892 millibars, Camille at landfall had a pressure of 909 millibars. So, Camille had a lower pressure at landfall(which by the way was that hurricane's lowest pressure recorded). However, Camille was about a third of the size of Katrina. As far as when Katrina was a category 5 hurricane in the central Gulf of Mexico 24 hours before it made landfall. It had a pressure down to 902 millibars making it the 4th lowest pressure reading in the Atlantic Basin. But the 902 millibars is the lowest pressure ever recorded for the Gulf of Mexico. The lowest pressure for the world was set with Typhoon Tip in October of 1979 with a pressure of 870 millibars. If you count all record low pressures for the world I believe Katrina is 7th lowest in the world. The lowest pressure ever measured in a hurricane in the Atlantic Basin was with Gilbert in 1988 with a pressure reading of 888 millibars.

Tip
Sure many know this but a bathtub holds a lot more than a few cases of bottled water.
Fill up all of your sinks and tubs.
some for washing ,some for drinking water.
