I installed Shimano Ultegra R8000 derailleurs on a friend's bike a couple weeks ago and the shifting was noticeably better than the Ultegra 6800 or Dura Ace 9000 (what I have). So if you're still not into electric shifting and thinking of an upgrade, I think the latest Shimano mechanical groups have reached a performance level that makes an upgrade worthwhile.

I built this up for my daughter to race NICA next year. Got it from a buddy at Backcountry who's son raced it then outgrew it. I modified it and installed a 1x11 drivetrain to keep things simple for my daughter. 26" hardtail, much lighter at 24 pounds than her starter bike. She's excited! If any of you have a 6-12th grader who shows any interest in mountain biking, check out your state's NICA league. Such a great environment, at least it is in Maryland :)

BMX frame identification needed
OK, need the collective braintrust, (maybe specifically Byron's). I bought this a decade ago on ebay, represented as a Schwinn Sting, and I never got around to building it up. I brought it to our East Coast swap meet last year and a guy challenged me, saying, "What makes you think this is Sting?" Well, other than what the ebay seller told me, the only thing I had was that it does have the fillet-brazed flared tubing that I remember on the Stings back in the day. But, what threw this guy off was the brake bosses on the chainstays. Anyone have any idea what this may be?

More than likely would have been a U-Brake in that location.
Remember having one on an 80s mountain bike and it was great at gathering mud and increasing the effort required to ride! Maybe google "chainstay u-brake bmx"? |

Post on the bmxmuseum forum and ask what it is.

So far, the responses pretty much say that it is a late 80s Schwinn Predator Sting that someone added mounts and guides to http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547344651.jpg

Thanks guys, I forgot about that bmxmuseum site. Looking at the headbadge of the predator, my frame does have two horizontal mounting holes that would have supported that badge. I haven't checked out the site yet, looking for it now.....

I've been looking all over bmxforum.com and can't find any threads about my mystery frame nor a serial number search function. Byron- do you have a link to what you've already posted and the responses? Or, should I just start a new thread in the "Name It!" forum? I don't want to duplicate something you may have already done. Thanks again.
I also requested to join the FB vintage BMX group but am waiting on approval...... |

Mystery solved. I have it on very good authority that is a 89 or 90 Sting Team Model. Came from the factory with the 990 mounts.
So, it actually is a Schwinn Predator Sting. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547433530.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547433530.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547433530.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547433530.jpg |

Thanks Byron! It does seem to be the 1989 Sting Team, now that I was able to google that specifically. In this picture, you can see both rear brakes (?!) mounted and what looks like a dual pull lever mechanism. Why not just run a front brake?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547512885.jpg Here is one with just the U-brake http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547513024.jpg and a thread on the bike. https://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/schwinn/34990/1 |
