My 1999 Bianchi. Stored it away for the winter today before heading south.

I got to ride with a legend this weekend at my daughter's NICA race. Tinker Juarez. A pretty cool, chill dude. Still doing 100 mile races! He came out just for the kids. My daughter and friends were inspired.

Was out on the first real trail ride on the fatty.
Was on the bike for the same amount of time as last week and did 7 less miles and I am way more tired!
Fat bikes are fun! Like riding in slow motion.

I don't know if anyone has dealt with thru axle stuff. It seems to be a MTB thing that's slowly invading the road market. So, the skewers listed on the cycling parts sites say thing like "Fits Grasshoppers or RockShock." So, here's what I found about thru axle.

There appear to be three basic configurations: plugs, bolts and simple thru axles. The plugs screw in with a 5mm Allen and have no handle. The bolts have what most closely resembles an old fashion skewer with a nut on one end and a cam handle on the other. The simple thru-axle has a cam or ratchet on one end and threads on the other which thread into the dropout or fork itself. Lynskey employs simple thru axles. You can see the differences on the DT Swiss site, components/RWS. BTW, RWS is DTS’s ratchet system that takes the place of the typical cam lever.

I needed the last spec, simple thru axle:
Rear Thru Axle - 12mm x 142mm x 1.0 Pitch
Front 15mm x 100mm x 1.5 thread pitch

In the end, the ONLY site that had a good description and exact sizes was this odd. They shipped the same day I ordered.

My last cheap wheelset came with the thru axles and adapters to fit standard bikes- I couldn’t figure out how you service or tighten the bearings; any insights?

He's still around and a few of my friend has said that they see him on the river trails just doing his thing. He's still strong from what I hear. I have never seen him in person but one time in a mt bike race (I was spectator) in the early 90s

If they are sealed cartridge bearings then you can clean and replace them without removing. Simply pull the seal ring out, clean out the crud and replace with fresh lube.

The bearings are press fit, so if you want to remove them you can sometimes knock them out from the opposite side with a drift, but you risk damaging the bearings. Or, you can get a bearing puller and do it right. Putting them back in is pretty simple, just get them lined up and press them in, use some lube.

I thought I read an article about Tinker in Outside magazine a few months ago. My google fu has a leak, and all I could find was this SI article, but it's still pretty good.

Interesting article. Tinker "produces no lactic acid." I wish I didn't make so much, so easily! Sometimes I really hate gravity. Also found Tomac's description of the first race with Tinker familiar, as Tinker flatted on the ride I did with him as well. I plugged his tire with my new bacon strip kit. No more carrying tubes! Pretty neat adaptation of automotive tire repair to a mountain bike application.
