Finished, for now anyway - son's high school bike.

Thanks to herroberst for contributing the Gatorback urban assault tires!

The bike is tout Mavic of mixed eras: the bits that came originally with the 1986 bike, and other newer Mavic bits. Practically everything that the bike needed came from my parts bins (or Mike's): 840/860 derailleurs, 821 shifters, 440 levers, pedals (dual cage/SPD type), cables and housing, replacement MA-40 rim, longer Mavic stem, seven speed freewheel . . . all I bought were the chain, bar tape and bar-end lights. The bike itself was a Craigslist find.

Bike rides like a dream - fast, quick, light. Columbus SLX. Son loves it. Named it "TM" which stands for Tour Mavic, but "Markus" to its friends.

^^^SLX Peugeot! Niiiice!

Smaller frame size with the steep head angles and short chainstays with blackwall tires gives it a purposeful, speedy look, doesn't it?

Yes, it is like my Cannondale R1000 that way. Not a bike I'd ride a century on, but he has his Gran Sport for that.

It may not show in the pics but I did some stuff to prepare the bike for living in the rain. Section of inner tube around the lower headset race. O-ring over the stem. I'm going to put a section of fat tire inner tube over the seatpost/binder bolt area. Drop of oil at each spoke nipple/eyelet. I need to get a can of Framesaver.

Edit : 22.1 lb w/ pedals. A bit heavier than I hoped. Mavic is not for weight weenies I guess.

I was in Portland for a week near the end of July and stayed in a hotel at the top of the hill on Barbur and walked to the bottom each day to work for a friend. I saw a guy on a recumbent with a faring just "flying"up the hill, I figured he had electric assist and I did see the components one day when he was closer to me. I think we need to be open to electric assist as it could really make cycling available to more people which should lead to more cycling trails and lanes as well as fingers crossed, more motorist who also bike, being better aware of bikes.

I just checked my used A9 Stronglight collection. I have 1 Silver, and 1 Black Alloy. Both are used and lacking decals. I don't remember seeing any on them. I also have a Campy SR that is in useable shape but does have a little bit of notchyness All 3 can be had.

Curious - Is the top tube kink a coming trend and any specific reason why?

This Coren has a kink TT.

I remember in my pimple faced racing days riding the Manhattan Beach GP. There was a section of rail road track every rider must go bank their bike and cruise through. That was our favorite spot watching em' bounce over the tracks.
