Black Widow!

Directions are a bit scetchy in the US. IL is considered the midwest. I always wondered midwest of what? New york?
Texas is southwest and AL is "deep" south. So I guess Florida must be next to the south pole.

We have timber rattlers here as well. When all the rich folk started building houses on the mountain behind me the snakes all moved down to the valley. Thanks!

In San Diego California Brown Widows are taking over Black widows areas.

On any given night, I can go in my backyard and find a dozen of them.

I tried spraying them however, they play dead and then when you come back they are gone.

They get on lawn furniture and hide out in the day and at night they come out. They females have egg sacks that can contain up to 200 spiders.

Ah well, I'm definitely a vengeful man- I thoroughly subscribe to the "best revenge is living well" philosophy... life is amazingly good these days- look at the company I keep right here!

In all seriousness, we're pretty lucky up here in the NW corner of the country... we have more to fear from "vicious ex's" than we do from poisonous critters- when I fed the new wires through my tunnel back to my engine compartment, I didn't give a second thought to getting bit by some creepy little arachnid... I guess this is where I confess to being the real sissy!

Great post and information. I am in Ocean Beach and my yard was full on these things - however everyone around here thought they were a Brown Recluse and it had the faint-of-heart staying indoors. They are everywhere here.

Show me where I have been shown to be wrong and didn't say so myself. When I am wrong, I am more than happy to fess up and learn from it. I'm fallible. One of the best ways to learn is to be wrong.

Texas is not part of the "West". It is part of the "South".

Verburg never comes close to admitting he is fallible. He always believes he is right even when presented with evidence that he is wrong. According to him, my race car should spin out anytime I apply the brakes hard. Instead, the brakes are well balanced. "California physics" I guess.

The Fish and Wildlife Service have there own map as you have shown. They put Hawaii with Idaho and California with neither.

While some consider Texas as part of the Southwest, that is certainly not universal. I don't think it is even the majority:

Heck, Kentucky and Tennessee were considered the west in the early 1800's and west of the Mississippi river was the frontier.....

Around these parts we have the brown recluse. As the name suggests you'll find it hiding in various places like undisturbed boxes, old shoes, etc. The bite is rarely fatal but can be pretty nasty, Google is your friend if you like that sort of stuff. A friend of mine was bitten as a kid, it laid him up for about a week and looked seriously nasty. We kill them occasionally in our house and frequently outside, fortunately getting rid of our wood pile has reduced their numbers.

A few years ago when I had finished rebuilding the 9 eleben motor and was in the process of installing it I found a widow tucked up under the engine.

Ordinarily that would be no big deal, I would just squish him and go about my biddness.
But this one was a bit more dramatic as I noticed him when dropped down onto my face as I was under the engine.
Sceamed like a school girl and hit my head on the way out, then squished him.
It took a while to get back under that car.

Oh, and California is not out west. So there.

I have Black Widow spiders all over my yard. I wear gloves when taking out the trash because they like the nooks in the plastic trash and recycling bins.

yup, true South, not Southwest (think AZ & NM) and not deep South (think AL and Miss), nope, Tejas is the true South. The only true South state...
