Count me as one of the unsympathetic folks on this one. This guy is so dumb, he needs to cool his heels in prison for a while. Why the hell:
1) would anyone even think of taking a shotgun along for a vacation in a foreign country, even a country that allowed it? 2) would you believe anything the US Customs official tells you about laws on the other side of the border? 3) would you expect to just be sent back if you're determined to be in possession of contraband? 4) would you not pay attention to the signs like the one below that are ubiquitous near the border? ![]() Took this photo myself in El Paso. Sorry, this guy was an idiot and our laws don't extend south of the border.

Fox came to the aid of a criminal? Why doesn't that surprise me?

There are people that used to hunt in Mexico with their own guns, he probably thought being honest and forthright would be the way to go. I have taken guns into Mexico but that was then, now I wouldn't even drive through Mexico. If I wanted to do it again I would probably just ship a car to Guatemala and drive down from there. I don't see any reason to be in Mexico, didn't even like it when I drove to Costa Rica, hitting the border with Guatemala was like night and day, a big relief.

Life is tough. It's even tougher when you are stupid. This guy made a stupid mistake. I am glad he got out though. Glad it wasn't New Jersey!!!!

I spent a couple days in jail in Culican Mexico, really bad food, really bad conditions. The only white guy there, not even a little bit of fun. For meals they brought in cast iron pots with beans floating around, some tortillas, and a cast iron pot with something that looked like milk with stuff floating over the top. If you didn't have your own utensils you were out of luck, trying to catch some beans with a folded tortilla. I never tried that ?milk.
I am sure this guy had a worse time. |

And no, the MSM was not silent; I watched a major TV segment on this a number of days ago and it was NOT on Fox.

I'm also with Rick on this issue, but glad the guy is out. I will no longer travel in Mexico. There is plainly just too much lawlessness there. I hope the guy learned some lessons from this: 1) Like the sign says, bringing guns or ammo into Mexico is a very serious offense. It's been that way for many, many decades. 2) Once you cross the border (into any other country) you are subject to their laws. 3) When you pass into Mexico, don't expect to be treated fairly or rationally when you get into a dicey situation. 4) How you fair is mostly up to the whim of local authorities. 5) Use some common sense for Crist's sake!

For the benefit of those who comment prior to knowing what's so:
. "There were questions about the case from the beginning. Ian McDonough, 27, a friend and fellow Marine who was with Hammar when he was nabbed, told FoxNews.com that four U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents told Hammar before he crossed into Mexico that as long as the required permit, which he completed, was submitted and he declared the gun to Mexican authorities, there would be no problem in bringing the vintage shotgun across the border. . The gun was a family heirloom that Hammar planned to use on a hunting and surfing trip in Costa Rica. . On Thursday, two Republican congressmen called for a national travel boycott of Mexico until the country releases Hammar, urging "all Americans" to campaign for the war veteran's freedom by turning off the tap on America's tourism dollars." The above strategy was prompted by appearances by several congresspersons on O'Riley's program where they were grilled quite heavily & exposed for their lack of involvement. Two other Fox journalists were closely involved, also. Just because some MSM entity played the story doesn't mean that they played a role in the Marine's release. He had been in prison since August. Within a week of being notified, O'Riley began his campaign to get the Marine released. Get it? ![]() ps Was it a dumb move on the Marine's part?...Yes, IMO. But that's not the point of this post.

If you don't think one couldn't be the other, you have led too sheltered a life. Besides, as an ex-sailor, I'm not particularly impressed by jar heads.

True, I did hear he did all he could to be legal, but see lessons #3 & #4.

Yes, the USMC is a department of the Navy... the Men's Department... and you'd never have to worry about being "impressed" by a Marine, because while you are pressing your jeans and playing cards on the boat, we are searching house to house to find real criminals!! Just a small Thank You Marine for doing this so others do not, will be quite enough!! SemperFi CWO4

Jon Hammar went into battle as a US soldier and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder.
It's offensive to see him called a bozo by you, given his service. But I know he would be the first to say that he served so that you could call him whatever name you'd like. He deserved better than to be chained up like a dog in a foreign country. Many young persons make errors in judgement but given he is a vet....do you really feel calling him a bozo is how you want to be perceived here in PPOT? If so have at it......but I have to say......that's pretty pathetic.
