Giant sign says dont bring firearms in or you go to jail, and people are surprised that he went to jail.
I'm still trying to figure out how him serving as a marine in US has any weight in Mexico...I'd be more likely to believe that they held that against him, more than it would help him.

you guys remember when El Paso PD chased a stolen car into mexico? i think the police got confused where the border was in the heat of the moment and screech to a halt on the wrong side..the Mexican officials arrested them.
i might be imagining this story. it was a long time ago. i think Clinton went and got them back. again, i could be full of poo.

I know lots of guys who hunt, or used to hunt, in Mexico. Long arms are not illegal. The issue, if it was real, was that the total length of his shotgun was 24", not 25". He checked in with US Customs first, with his paper work. He then took the paperwork over to the Mexican customs and DECLARED his shotgun. The real issue I expect was that the Mexican Customs official wanted a few bucks and the kids didn't understand the game.

If I were considering bringing a gun into another country, it would not matter to me in the least what anyone in the US gov't. said about the legality of it - not State, not USCBP, not ICE, etc. I can't imagine why I'd even bring a gun with me into a country with a thoroughly corrupt police force and where guns are widely known to carry stiff penalties. But if I were going to do it, the Mexican Embassy is whom I'd be calling and asking for a get-out-of-jail-free card BEFORE I went. I'd want some pretty serious paperwork signed by someone whose word counted and I'd want it before I stepped foot in Mexico. Blaming this on anyone but himself is truly the American way.

James, it's just as likely the "Mexican Customs official" took a liking to his shotgun & decided to have it.

I saw Bill O'Riley blathering on about this. He babbled on for several minutes. Typically for him, he blamed the guy's problem on the president. He never did explain why he thinks it's OK for Americans to ignore the laws of the countries we visit - or why the president should think it was OK.

On the president - I only saw O'Reilly's disdain on why there wasn't any intervention by him or his staff - specifically our secretary of state after so much publicity on the marine vet's plight. I don't remember him saying the president was to blame for the arrest and incarceration - only questioned why he wasn't doing anything to get him out. There has been more coverage on FNC on the situation than on other networks. I've seen several segments over several different evenings. I'm not trying to take sides but offering my observations. YMMV....just glad to see stories like this get some publicity. I only wish there wasn't this very tiring political spin on everything that happens in the country. Maybe one day we will have less division - until then it's tearing us apart. BTW - one more point - all these pundits (incl. those on FNC) make their living off creating division. But in there amongst the mud there is information if you can stand to wade through it all.
