This topic was a Facebook post which I read last week.
The problem is mostly in restaurants, not grocery stores as far as the mislabeling goes. |

I eat fish a few times a week and sushi every time I travel on the company dime. Never ever had the slightest problem except for food poisoning at Red Rocks Resort in Vegas at a company event. I think one of the lettuce wraps had some undercooked shrimp in it. As soon as I was over that, I was eating sushi again on the way home in Pasadena, CA at my favorite place. Just about every Sunday Mrs. Lee goes to the Ranch Market and gets a live Tilapia for dinner. They gut and scale it for us at the store, but leave head and tail on. We steam it. I never get stomach problems from fish. I have probably eaten fish every single day I've ever spent in China too. Never a problem.

Since it is green, I took his meaning as, "Mike, you are a stinkin' NAZI bastage," or something to that effect. It just isn't that funny, not so much offensive to me.
Actually, over population will almost certainly be what does us in as a species, as I see it. Clean, fresh water will get to be liquid gold. Unless we get hit by a bigger piece of comet or meteor, or some manbearpigdogcat supervirus kills us all.

I eat what we catch. People actually pay for fish?

No offense taken here. We should never forget the kind of policies that Mike promotes on overpopulation were once seriously taken by Nazi Germany.
I like fish and women.

![]() mike spews "stuff". he's like on the lunar cycle..next few weeks, his comments will be calm again. i love fish. like all things, harvesting fish should be careful and with respect to protect the source. i buy whole fish from asian markets. but i dont know species enough to guarantee the "reef snapper" is indeed a snapper at all.

so i can't find any details on the report. if most commonly mislabeled product is tuna....what IS the actual meat they're selling? not the white tuna passed off as escolar that's in the report.
the report is also fuzzy. if white tuna is mislabeled...is normal red tuna mislabled as well? |

Yes, sushi as often as my wallet will allow... and yes to buying in a market.
Maybe because I live in a coastal/fishing town but to my knowledge this has been going on for a looooong time... I remember as a kid, shark being sold as swordfish, manta ray being sold as scallop... nothing new here really.

i saw a show. they are farm raising tuna off the coast of croatia ( or turkey?)..anyways. huge fish, swimming in gigantic open ocean pens.
there is hope. they are successfully breeding a superior product. win!

RE: Mislabeling fish... product name is a HUGE part of marketing... long time ago tuna was called mackerel (technically it is part of the mackerel family) but people thought of mackerel as throw away/bait/cat food... so they changed the name to tuna.
Same with squid... squid=yuck! Calamari=yum!

As the token Jew on this board, I hereby grant nostril cheese special dispensation, since it was damned apparent that his SARCASTIC (green) was in response to the overpopulation comment. Which was probably a joke, too.
FWIW we buy fish whole at Whole Foods. My wife doesn't even let the fishmonger scale or behead them first. My favorite? Spanish mackerel, marinated in miso and broiled.
