I had a '71 S once with 40 some odd thousand miles on it.

After the odo spun over probably twice. That's a great car for someone with deep pockets, but if it has only 42,000 miles on it total, I'll eat a square inch of the engine padding. Just send it on up to Long Beach.

The Viet Nam Vet who bought the car in 1969 after returning, used the car very little, it was his 2nd car and drove it only on weekends, it went into storage in 1975 so he drove the car for 5 years, many little clues telling me it has only 42,000 on it. Nothing has been dicked with, no rust, orig paint, perfect gaps, the doors shut like new, incredible car

Kind of strange that someone would buy an expensive sports car like that and park it at 5 years old w/o regard to the condition of the storage. Don't get me wrong, it could be a lot worse as in rusted-out, but that dash looks like it must have been parked outside in the desert for years. Also, what's the story with the rattle-can primer all over the body?

Once again, not knocking the car. I'm as jealous as everyone else and it's a great resto candidate. Just wondering what happened.

The vet made a lot of $$ after the war and his dad was high up the food chain in the military, hence my guy secured Govt contracts, made a lot lost a lot, his primary driver was a corvette so the car was parked in a leaky barn, but in a dry climate. there is no rust, more pics to follow, the rattle can was to cover minor surface rust, he hoped to restore it someday, but never had the money, car was forgotten. It came to me through a sprint car racing buddy, who knew the car and the caretaker needed the money, whom the vet gave him the car. The care takers son is a racer and they need race engines so my purchase is funding this, me being be a racer understood the scenario so win win on both sides. This car will be brought back to original, with the best workmanship

You're probably way ahead of me on this, but if not, get a copy of M. Donohue's road test of all the '69 911 cars in C&D magazine. I think that the 911S was a targa.

I'm with Milt on this. I just recently sold a '72 911 with 34k miles and I can't see how this car could get into this condition if it was stored inside.

Number one it was in a ****ty leaky barn, 2 many clues to even fathom he drove the car 30K miles a year for 5 years. My acquaintance has known the Vet for 40 years and remembers when the car went into hiding in 1975. Clues, bright gauges, no pedal wear, engine leak down, no rust wear there should be rust, bellypan perfect, not even a dent. once she is all apart I will discover more.

Sounds promising. Send the engine sound pad up so I can eat it. Or better yet, bring it to the sushi lunch I've owed you for 8 years. :) You can take pics for all to see.

Stored inside? Well, good luck with the restoration. I'm also in the camp finding the miles hard to believe. Milt's safe...there is no engine padding to eat.

(edit) A tip of my hat to those willing to rescue cars that not too many years ago would have been scrapped.

The speedo on my 70S broke at 44k which it still shows and I have numerous shop receipts showing the same mileage and that it was never repaired. I know my car had over 100k judging from the wear on the carpeting and the pedals, the shape of the aluminum trim, etc and it was parked in storage in 85 till I bought it. It looked much better than this one.

Looks to me like this car was hit in the rear pretty hard to have bent up that rear over rider like that. The rear deck lid has been replaced with a later unit. Makes me suspect that the rear license panel has also been replaced.

All of the bumper trim has been painted black over the aluminum. The headlight trim rings have been painted in body color which makes me question the original paint. The aluminum bumper end trim on at least one side looks like it is ready to fall off like it had been removed at one time. Another indication of a possible re paint. Maybe in the jambs its original... I also see what appears to be blue overspray in the engine comp. on some of the harness and one the CDI panel components

A good indication of low original miles would be the condition of the aluminum rocker trim and the rear bumper end trim. They get pitted by road debris.

Man, you guys are HARD on him. He never said it was original paint. I would be more than happy have this blue targa to go with my 69S Coupe.

I think "realistic" is a more appropriate word than "hard".

Damn that car looks like it spent alternating years under a blazing sun and constant rain. Never seen such a combination of rust and sun damage!
