Here's a few more of my affordable 996 after a good weekend of cleaning. I'm going to order an add-on GT3Tek GT3 lower front spoiler to remedy my missing aerokit front bumper and get some spacers for the goofy stock offset wheels until I find a better looking 18" wheel at a reasonable price. Lots of maintenance stuff in the near future, as well as an Evolution Motorsports V-flow intake (already ordered) and probably some Fister D mufflers.

Nice looking car, Matt! It looks like you should lower the car a bit, or have oxygen piped into the cabin.

My longer term to do list includes a RoW M030 suspension, which should help. Even at 96k it feels tight but is floaty, so I strongly suspect the shocks are shot.

If it has been posted a long time and is not sold there are probably issues. Or it might be time to offer $2,000 under the asking price.

Ya, something is up that we aren't catching in the photos. It looks like there's something in the center console, but it doesn't look big enough to be a radio...
But I agree if he needs to sell, he's been sitting on it for 3 wks now. I'd go offer 13 cash and see what you got...

Post his reply tomorrow!

I'm not ready to pick up a car yet, and it's hard to beat on a guy you aren't in front of.

Despite all the hype about full leather, now that I have my first full leather interior I think I prefer the base interior. Proper care for leather is a PITA, and leather dash shrinkage from sun damage is common on cars that have actually been driven. The base model interior isn't fancy but it wears like iron.

450knotOffice 11-19-2013 08:29 PM

Really? Mine is a MY2000 with 157k, and it has nearly perfect leather - the only thing not perfect is my driver's seat, which has some patina, but no cuts, tears, etc. the rest of the leather, including the dash, is perfect.

The dash on my 02 is still perfect but my car has a tint all around which I'm sure helps.

Two questions:

I think the front drive shafts can be removed from a C4 to make it RWD only, yes?

At what point do you say the IMS issue can be ignored? If the engine has 100,000 miles and the IMS is original, is there any point in doing the upgrade? Is it a case of 'if it's going to fail it will fail by 60,000 miles?

That first car is super cheap, ugly IMO, but wow that's a lot of car for $13,000.

I don't know about the drive shafts, but why would you? 5% - 10% of these engines are affected. No one can answer definitively whether getting to a mileage milestone gets you past the danger zone. I considered the $1500 cheap insurance.

1990C4S 11-20-2013 04:03 AM

I would prefer AWD in winter RWD in summer. My 964 is 'okay', it would be more fun as a RWD car, aside from winter,

It's pretty common for guys to remove the driveshafts and front differential from the 996TT to make a poor-man's GT2, so I assume it would work with the C4.

The IMS fails (if it fails) at a wide variety of mileages, so there's not really any clear answer. Most older 996s are coming up on a clutch replacement, I would recommend just replacing it then.

New wheels would make a HUGE difference. The color still isn't the best, but those chromed 17s with crappy offsets aren't helping matters.

1990C4S 11-20-2013 07:06 AM

The rims are about 30% of the fugly factor. For that price I'd drive it. But never wash it.

M.D. Holloway 11-20-2013 07:07 AM

With that color it would hide dirt well...

Obviously upkeep is the key. My car is mechanically sound but hadn't really been cosmetically loved, based on the cloudy carbon fiber trim it spent some time in the sun. I'll take care of the issues, and a 20% tint and sunshade should help keep it nice this time.

ok, why shouldn't I buy this car? Looks like it has the LMS upgrade and is street legal/track ready.

Like I need another car...

Sadly, if I sell the two basses I have on the market right now, it would just about cover the car

So your two basses didn't sell in time? You need something like this Todd :)
