I would say that is highly likely. Here is an old link from one of the countless insurance auction/VIN-check aggregators:
Damaged 2001 PORSCHE 911 for sale

Looks like it sold a couple years back at an insurance auction in WA with an opening bid of just over $15k. From the pics, it doesn't look too bad on the surface. However, the caliper looks to be covered in crud in the wheel pic. Plus the airbag wasn't deployed. So, I'd say it's either a flood car or like Matt said, it may have had serious underbody damage (or both).

Really hard to tell. It looks like the bumper was torn from the front left side. Like Eric noted, there's a lot of gunk on the caliper, and also the lug bolt holes are full of mud. I've also never seen the interior trim peel in chunks like this one has. I would put my money on flood.

I went and drove the 2004 C4S today that is available locally, currently the seller is asking $27k. He went through the history, he's had is since 84k and has records back to 60k. It currently has a bit less than 93k on it. It was mostly flawless and as advertised. The wheels are curbed a bit and he told me straight away it needs tires. He's a sales guy at our local P car dealer. The work he has had done (IMS, bushings, alternator, cat, etc.) all done there. I liked the silver more than a thought I would. These are really GT cars, it was smooth, too quiet, comfortable. I'll find out about my job in a a week or so and re visit the car if it is still there. Super nice guy to talk to.

That, and the other records are certainly a plus.

There are several on fleabay that might be worth keeping an eye on, and/or using as "comps" for the one local to you:

Porsche 911 Carrera 4S | eBay
Porsche 911 4S | eBay
Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 2 Door | eBay
Porsche 911 Carrera 4S | eBay
Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 2 Door | eBay
Porsche 911 2dr Carrera 4 s Coupe 6 Speed Manual | eBay

Or, if you don't mind a bit of a project:
Porsche 911 911 4S | eBay :D

I would love a 996 but what is the point of a C4S? $10k more for the widebody?

onewhippedpuppy 07-24-2015 05:07 PM

With the major work being done that C4S is priced well. Every modern Porsche is too quiet, nothing that the Fister mod won't fix.

Yeah but can't we call it something else :-)

I agree the car is priced well. I'm assuming an offer of a few thousand less would be listened to. I'd prefer to buy local as long as I like the car. Buying from someone who works at the local dealer is a plus. This town doesn't have the independent shop selection that the Seattle area does so the dealer is probably where work would get done for things I would not take on myself and they know this car well. I'm trying to figure out how confident I am this job will pan out. The car really doesn't make sense otherwise but I won't really know for a few weeks. If it is still there I'll make a run at it and if not, I'll broaden the search. I've looked at most of those cars on Ebay. There are some nice ones out there. The car with the fire is the same color as my old Boxster. I love that lapis blue.

I looked at the 04 local car again today and spent time on a longer drive and going through the records. We have a deal subject to a PPI that will be done the week after next. Now it's time to look at mods (Fister) wheels and tires :-) I am going to look at a second set of wheels and rotate tires for track use. I probably won't do that many DE's but our club is beefing up its program and Seattle has a great one already. I'll be instructing on the 26th and hopefully this car will be ready!

OZ Allegrita HLT in 18" diameter are super light, reasonably affordable, and look great on the 996.

Looks like a scam...

Paul_Heery 08-01-2015 03:34 AM

Probably a scam at $14,700. It is on rennlist for 30K and was also featured on Jalopnik.
