How common is D-Chunking in the 3.4?
Nobody found a way to make money from it through fear mongering so it became pretty uncommon.

I saw that on eBay... curious to see what it ends up going for... it is local to me...

Not that I have money/space for another car.

It wasn't too long ago when on this BBS, most everyone hated 996s. Too feminine, too slab sided, a departure from the classic 911. Now it's a drool fest!

That's 'cause we can afford them now!

Plus, they're no longer trendy.

I still think they look like complete crap, especially the non-S, turbo, GT2, etc models. I think the attraction is that you can buy an everyday supercar for $15K and beat the living hell out of it. That's a fun fantasy to live :D

They sound like crap, too. Like fart-tastic.

About $800 in chinesium stainless headers and glasspacks solve that. Transformed my hairdresser 986S into what sounded like a cup car, flames out the back and all.

Richard, you're a well known 993 owner, and as such it is your God given DUTY to hate on the 996. 😉
YOU think they're ugly, but most people I've met think my 996 is beautiful (well, except for the air cool snobs)

Eye of the beholder.

Scott, I tried to throw you a bone with the "supercar" thing. I tried, really I did :D

450knotOffice 11-08-2013 06:13 PM

Yea, I had to laugh. 😄
Supercar? Ummm, yeaaaa.

My '88 Carrera had a built 3.2, and exhaust combo that was some combo of headers, Triad race mufflers, heat exchangers with a test pipe, and a B&B two out. Intake was an open element K&N with a MAF conversion. It hauled ass and screamed at high RPMs. And my two 996s that had an intake and exhaust blew it away. My 2001 with Cargraphic mufflers and an EvoMS intake is the best sounding car that I've owned, better than my Maserati Coupe with Tubis. I think you need to drive some better 996s.

A $20k 996 is better than your $40k+ 993 in every quantitative way. Maybe not quite a supercar, but far closer than it's much more expensive predecessor.

You're welcome. It's faster, handles better, stops shorter, and is lighter. Oh yeah, and the A/C works. But at least the 993 is twice as much.

You know, we could just have one of these threads and sticky it. Someone brings up the virtues of the 996 and all of the air cooled guys (many of whom have never even driven a 996) step in to tell everyone how much better their cars are. I love all 911s, and think the 993 is one of the most beautiful examples of it. But it is inferior in every measurable way to the 996. We can argue character all day long, but at least come with the perspective of having driven a 996 so we can talk in some variety of informed opinion. I always wonder if this isn't a case of justifying the purchase price of the more expensive air cooled cars. Considering that a nice 993 C2 sells for 996 GT3 money, I'd probably have to do some convincing myself.......
