2001 Porsche 911 Turbo (996) - $36000 (Mt Tabor, NJ)

Not in the market at the moment but seems like a realistic deal.

I call BS on the OAS. No expert, but my guess would be more $$$ for head gasket or worse cracks ... If it was the OAS, it would make perfect sense to have it fixed before sale and ask $15k.

Air-Oil Separator. When they fail, it causes clouds of white smoke to billow out.

thanks. I'm looking at these as well while they are affordable. It's a whole other animal from my old S though.

That doan look like an easy fix, and he salvage title kills it dead. You'd be in for 35k, and that's pretty much it's value being a cab tip.

Not sure of a smoke sound - boom doesn't work

Last week Thursday on the I-15 in traffic heading home I experience a blurb in the idle. I rev the motor a bit and notice a blue cloud behind me. In my head I'm thinking that can't be me. Another blurb and more smoke...it's me. No warning lights or other indications of a problem. I quickly move to the right to prepare to stop. Car runs clean, no bangs/clanks/grinding sounds and no more smoke so I head for the next exit 1/2 mile up the road. Off the exit from a stop car runs rough again and lots of smoke. I pull into the first lot and leave the engine running. No visible oil or ugly sounds. Rev again and a big cloud of smoke now accompanied with a flashing check engine light & check oil light. Shut it down and call AAA. While waiting I check the oil (I topped it 2 weeks prior) and it is full and clean.

Shop called and said the Crankcase Ventilation Value is clogged and the intake manifold is loaded in oil. Isn't the CVV = to the AOS on a 996? Anyway, they are dropping the motor to do the work and noted the water pump looks original so I'm changing that out too along with the coolant hoses of which some are leaking. Car has 145K miles now. Sigh of relief it wasn't a death blow. I love driving it and hope to keep it for the duration.

Java,

If they are dropping the engine out, it might be worthwhile looking into an IMSB upgrade if you haven't already. Classic "while you're in there" scope creep...

Rac did not drop my motor to change AOS. Trans was out for clutch and IMS if that makes a difference.

I'm going to mention again that I'm still a skeptic on IMSb replacement. You're taking out a factory-developed part and replacing it with something that MAY have a higher failure rate.

The car is at European Automotive Center in Poway. I have no experience with them but online reviews are positive. Phone conversations have all been positive. They noted the various coolant line leaks along with the oil fouling so recommend an engine drop. They invited me to swing by tomorrow to view the motor sans car and go from there. Estimate is currently ~ $1600 total.

My clutch (also original) is nearing EOL and I intend to replace the IMS at the same time with the ceramic version. That does not require an engine drop.

That pile o parts might motivate the unconvinced to buy Raby's IMS replacement. I chose it because his research and development was impressive. He seems to understand these engines better than most.
