I like the targas for road trips b/c of the ease of putting luggage, etc. in the back. Something Ferry always wanted to do...

A local guy has a light blue paint to order 996 with a light grey interior. The wood trim looks 1000x worse than this car. Wood speaker surrounds? Barf.

What do you guys think of this one? My brother is selling his 2002 Targa:

'02 911 Porsche 911 Targa
Looks way nicer than the mileage would indicate. Wish I had the dough for that.

That's a really nice looking car, but it's not steeply discounted as the seller would like to believe.....

Thanks, gentlemen, for the helpful and candid comments. Duly forwarded.

Price is negotiable. I'm going to post it for him in this forum's classifieds.

It is a beautiful car. He'll find a home for it sooner or later.

Go try finding one for that. KBB is full of crap, any good condition 996 for under $15k is a good deal, especially a 996.2.

Agreed. Edmunds puts that price below dealer retail and a bit above private party sale. Haven't used KBB in years, Edmunds is usually much more on the mark.

Congrats Rattlsnak! Good chance to get some decent headlights on the thing! I think you are the first one in this thread that actually went and bought one of these so-affordable cars! I have the impression, everyone else is just watching the train wreck in terms of price decay on these cars!

I read a thread on the 996 forum (continued on RL) where a Brit chap bought a flood 996 and brought it back to life for little money. Fun read .... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/663343-flood-damaged-996-a.html I'd love to do something like that. And if you fail, you can always throw in the towel and sell the bits...

What is wrong with yours?

Rattlsnak, are you just going to do a stock rebuild or something more interesting? Looks like a 997 front end conversion candidate to me.

I've always wanted to do a 996 lightweight. It's been pretty well documented that you can get 300+ lbs out of a 996 without drastic or super expensive measures, and a 996.1 C2 is under 3000 lbs already stock. 300 HP and 2600 lbs would be fun. Here's the weight loss thread from the 6speedonline 996TT forum: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/996-turbo-gt2/71489-official-turbo-weight-loss-thread-lightest-turbo-list.html

What's the story? Crashed? Salvage? Is the price top secret?

I saw that flood car thread. Crazy! I bought this from the original owner / via a salvage yard. I talked to him personally. He replaced one motor out of warranty with a factory Porsche engine (due to the d-chunk cylinder failure) and when the second engine blew up 12,000 miles later with the exact same failure, he took the loss and sold it to a salvage yard and bought a new Cayman S. They started selling parts off of it until I got it from them, so it is a clean title. And this car is a 996.2, so it has the newer style non-boxster looking headlights.

I thought serious about going for the 997 look, but the main attraction point for this year model car to me was that I already have bumpers, a hood and tail lights that were takeoffs when we did an aero kit for a customer. I actually pulled them out of the back and had them in primer before I even picked up the car. lol.. The only thing I have to buy outright are the headlights ($$$$) and a few trim pieces and brackets here and there.

See above.. perfect body and has lots of goodies on it like short shifter, cup suspension, bigger sway bars and strut braces.

Sideways.

Sounds like a good starting point. Are you going stock or some variety of hot rod?

I have made three tuition payments for my kids this year (since September). Each one about the cost of a nice 996. Sigh.
