The 996 is not a great car, that's why they are cheap. Some people want a fun commuter car that's not an appliance. A 996 would not be a replacement for a 997 in my mind, but it would be a lot nicer than my Jetta TDI with 300,000 miles on it.

Having owned multiple 996 and 997, the 997.1 drives like a 996.2, because it basically is. You can argue styling all day long because it's 100% subjective, but from a performance standpoint the 997 doesn't offer any significant advantages. This obviously doesn't apply to the more limited edition models which offer more power and are more expensive.
From a pure driving standpoint between a base 996 and 997 I will take a 1999 996.1. Cable throttle, lightweight, rev-happy 3.4, it's the most raw of the bunch. |

My 2000 3.4 has 170,000 miles - 135,000 driven by ME over the past nine years. It's on the original engine, which is leak free, smoke free, and still feels like it has all of the original 300 HP it was originally endowed with.
The car does not rattle or squeak. It drives as straight and hands-off as ever. There are no warning lights on. The interior is in pretty good shape. In fact, my wife's 2007 Cayman has had more interior bits fall off (minor) than mine (ZERO), and my car is seven years older. I would not call my fifteen year old daily driven 996 a piece of junk or poorly built. |

I am assuming responsibility of my parents. Tough times for sure. I am in SD and they are in Santa Barbara. My 996 just eats up the miles with a smile. Got caught in traffic on the 210 in high 90's heat and the car just sucked it up. The 996, IMO, is the first 911 that works as a DD. Not super fast or a super car by any SoCal stretch but damn if I would want anything else...Even if that means I have to work the clutch and shift lever for 1 hour on a jammed 210 East bound. Really loving my purchase right ow.

Here is a new low in price - a high on this thread, I suppose. I am glad this is not local!

I remember when I ditched the cats and went tube headers with big borla glass mufflers on the rear of my 3.2 Boxster S. That, plus an air intake mod and some weight loss and that car was instantly a different beast. The engine revved so free and fast. Thing was a monster.
I would love to do the same to a 996 again.

Someone from my university's former students group is selling a very clean 2000 996 with a manual/65K miles. There should be a link available sometime this morning, give us a few...

I need one of these. Still.
The white car is perfect for me. The color, and the timing, are not.... But I will own one.

![]() My opinion on white has change over the years. Anything close to a daily driver, white is perfect. A beautiful car that gets a lot of love and dusting - black ONLY! G |

I'll sell my factory aerokit with litronics, carbon interior package and LSD for 15k to a pelican. Just did a service on it, but seondary air injection code pops. Hasn't affected performance, but just an annoyance. Burns no oil, no ims or RMS issues. Had it ppi'd at porsche of Bakersfield. Just drove it from Cali to Indy with no issues. Don't need to sell, but 9 cars is getting out of control.
