Flat 6 and Jake are great at stoking the fires of M96 hysteria, it's great for business. Never 100% believe someone with a vested interest......

David, that sounds like classic AOS. It can be done with the engine in place but I hear it's a PITA. Despite them supposedly being a "common" failure I've never done one.

I did the AOS on my Boxster a couple of months ago. Fairly cheap part, but probably the most miserable job I have ever done on a Porsche. All due to trying to access the bolts and clamps.

I did that job on my 996 a few years ago. Awful job! It took forever (the whole weekend), all because it's nearly unreachable until you lower the engine as far as you can and remove half the intake system. Even then, you're still working by Braille, and your left arm will look like you lost a fight to an alley cat due to the close proximity with the sharp edged coolant reservoir.

Conversely, my wife's Cayman's IOS replacement job was CAKE! Totally accessible.

I just got back from the shop. AOS is toast, the water pump and thermostat housing are leaking and most of the coolant hoses and plastic connectors are in poor shape. All are going to be replaced. Guy is also going to peek at the clutch to see how far gone - might replace that at the same time since most of the labor is already being done. I'm trying to avoid the "while we're in there" routine as the timing for this is not the best, but then when is it best really...

That's about $2500 on the high side. Plus it's red so maybe $3K on the high side. I think you can find an '03+ for near that money very soon...not my '03...but an like it.

That red car isn't half bad, I watched one with similar mileage go for a similar price yesterday, and that was wholesale.

Has anyone here driven a 996 with that many miles? A friend of mine drove an old cab and said it was 'clunky' .... maybe it's a maintenance thing.

But that red car did not seem high to me....

Maintenance, just like any other car.

I have an E39 with 206K on it, drives like new (better actually), but I've kept up with the suspension wear.

Friend of mine has a 996.1 C4 and 160K (on original IMS bearing, too) - tight as a drum.

My 2000 996 has 170,000 miles on it. I've driven it for all but 35,000 of those miles. It's a great driving car, and NOT clunky or rattly. My suspension IS original in every way, so it certainly needs a refresh, but it still drives straight and true.

I had a 2000 996 with 100k and a 1997 986 with 135k. Both rock solid and rattle free. They are well made cars.

Miles are not a huge issue on most 911s. There's a guy over on Rennlist with a 996 TT with 310K miles and all major components are original. He is on clutch #3, however.
