Just brought home a 1999 C2 cab with 6 speed manual, ocean blue/tan, LSD, traction control, PSM (navigation), leather front and rear seats, 8 way power with memory front seats, parking sensors, wind screen, overall very good shape, limited maintenance history, but has documented oil change history, new clutch (3,000 miles) cooling system clean and re-fill, ac serviced and checked, no oil leaks or discharges, no accidents on history file, re-dyed interior leather components, needs rear tires. $12,500 from private party. This price allows me to spend some $ making sure all is alright and hopefully have a reliable vehicle for the next 5-10,000 miles. I have been looking and reading for the past 3-4 years and this one met all my requirements.

IMS bearing?

I elected to not do a PPI on this car. I expect it to need a few items that the PPI money will go to. I have a thread over in the 996 forum looking for suggestions on how to attack this car.

My thoughts are to do an oil change with a complete evaluation of the oil, followed by a new AOS (though there is not am extreme amount of vacuum at the oil filler at this time) and then some "while you are in there items" that may come up, I plan on using the IMS Guardian rather than a replacement bearing, as it seems that the 99's with the dual row bearing may have a better life expectancy than the later single row. The oil evaluation will tell me what direction to go in this regard. I hope to end up with no more than another $2,500-$4,000 in bringing the car to the point where I know the condition of all major components and then drive the crap out of it for a few years.

T-car no record of an IMS bearing being done. When I talked to the dealer that did the clutch I reviewed what steps they would have taken when replacing the clutch and he indicated that if there were any oil leaks around the rear main seal or bearing they would have noted it in their report.

FWIW, some 99's had single row bearings and some 2000's had dual row.
There seems to be no corrrelation to VIN number or date of mfg either.

Di the mech look at the bearing and see that it was dual row?

But the lowered stance and aero front end and tint do add to the styling....

I would have bid on that if it hadn't been on the other side of the country.
Here in SoCal, I would say 90% of the cars for sale are convertibles. I love convertibles but not on a 911. Of the remaining 10%, half are automatics which is also a non starter. Add to it that I don't want a black interior, means the remaining pickings are pretty slim.

To each his own, I love my GP White SC and would have taken that over my red Boxster all day long. I think white looks classy and understated on a Porsche.

Maybe too much for the street but a white brumos style 996 or boxster looks great.
