In an effort to sell before I have to travel again, I am lowering the price to $18,000.
It puts me in the red a bit, but I have received valuable enjoyment from owning the car.

Do you guys think the price is fair?

Checked out this 2000 Carrera today. Looked to be in nice shape. Low KM. Paint and interior very nice. Suspension is not stock, looks low. No maintenance records.

Price is equivalent to about $23,000.

I need to schedule a test drive. I've yet to actually drive a 996. I'm worried that it will be disappointing compared to the air-cooled models.

Will a 2000 Model Year have a dual row IMS ?

Here are some pics and the link:

Very fair. I look at prices a lot, there are not may of these around. It will sell at $18k.

How much activity have you gotten on it since the price drop? That is the true barometer you need to pay attention to.

Sorry, for some reason I thought your car was a C4. I think it is still 'fairly' priced, but I suspect a sale price of $16,000 may be where you end up with the ailments you list. A transmission rattle will scare off a lot of buyers.

The bold part is unclear to me:

Quote:
During my ownership, it has had any major maintenance done by Exclusive Motorwerks in Denver NC. They installed a new Sachs clutch at 94957. They also determined that the IMS bearing is the Porsche "late single-row bearing with cover plate 99602401". Exclusive installed a new throw-out bearing at this time (while you're in there...). They also installed a new oil-filler neck and an air-oil separator. Most recently, they installed new O2 sensors around March of this year.
Does that statement mean it does need to have the IMS changed?

This one is on the Porsches for sale section on Pelican. Seems to have had some recent work done including IMS. It has been reduced to $12K. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/920913-99-911-coupe-6speed.html

I don't get why someone would replace the steering wheel with one that doesn't have an airbag in a street car though.

Well, one reason may be that the original deployed in a collision that isn't being disclosed. Not saying that is the case here, but certainly a possibility. Airbags are expensive, so it's pretty common to see salvage/insurance auction cars being fixed-and-flipped with aftermarket, non-airbag wheels. Or, sometimes you will see airbag wheels, but they will be the wrong model and/or color. I'd be sure to run a Carfax & AutoCheck on it. Also, if you google the VIN, you can sometimes get a hit on the actual salvage auction page to see the "before" pictures.

No activity at all before the price drop.
Now that I have lowered it to $18k, I have received one message asking "What's the deal with your odometer?"

I have no f**king clue what they mean, and have not had any further comment since I replied to them asking for them to clarify the question.

Some engines have the double row bearing and some having the single row.
I wanted to put that info in the ad so people could know what's inside the engine.

Either way, it means the engine still has the Porsche part - not an LN or other aftermarket.

1999-2000 was the change from double row to single row bearings.
Most 2000's had single row.

Is there any data that shows one bearing is better than the other?

I believe the double row does not fail.

The best data I have is that the IMS settlement only covers 2001-2005 engines. Those are the single row vs. double row bearings. Apparently, the earlier double row failures was statistically insignificant, and that is why they were excluded in the settlement.

That certainly is not true, but the failure rate is much lower for the double row.

Each bearing in the double row is larger than the bearing in the single row.

If you search, you can find data, but both do fail.

FWIW, the failure is usually due to the failure of the seal, allowing the factory lube to wash out and eventually the bearings fail as there is not a pressurized oil source at the bearing.

By the way, all the above is pertinent to the Boxster also as they share the same engine family.

I'd rather have a chain steering wheel on it than black wheels.

Given that, it's apparent your local market is soft for a 996 and you appear to be over priced.

I listed my 996 $2K under the next similar car and got a total of 5 inquires in 2 weeks. After a couple low ball offers the eventual buyer showed up, looked at the car for 10 minutes, drives to the end of street and back, and we're at his bank for full asking price ($14K).

Agree with you on the black wheels. That car has zero curb appeal.

I agree but wheels have to one of the easiest upgrades, OEM Porsche wheels are all over eBay for ~$1500.

I also would rather have the OEM airbag steering wheel... but that is just me.

That's like not buying a house because you don't like the paint color in one room. Our local Alloy Wheel Refinishing guy will fully refinish for about $100 per wheel in any color you want.
