True, shopping is always fun. The few times I've looked at a car that I had reservations about, my gut turned out to be right. I drove 7 hours to look at this one, described as being a very nice car but these were the only pics provided. Turned out to have poorly done body work, a terrible partial respray, a filthy interior that was totally sun baked, a top that was a shot, etc......

Yup... My dad drove 5 hours to look at a corolla with 4k on the odo that had supposedly never been wrecked. He could see the poor body work from the street...

Like I said, if I was in PHX to look at that red car it would be way more tempting...

We had a '98 2.5L which was my wife and mines road trip car prior to having our kid. Great little car, more trunk room then we expected and easy to drive a lot of miles in. I would defiantly look into the LN IMS bearing installation though.

No, the front trunk on a boxster isn't 'international travel size luggage' big, but day to day, I was pleasantly surprised. It could swallow a ton of groceries. If you have a reasonable golf bag, you can get clubs in the rear trunk.

I bought my 2001 Boxster last December just to see how I would like a Boxster and to compare it to my '86 Carrera which I had owned since 2001. Ended up selling the 911 over the summer and don't miss it a bit. The 911 was fun, but the Boxster just does everything so much better.

As I do my search and gather info another question for the board, are the tiptronic transmissions in the Boxster/Cayman durable ? Should I rule them out or stay in the mix ?

I haven't heard that they aren't reliable, but unless you need one, why not get a stick? Also tips are less desirable and will effect ability to resell.

I am in total agreement with this. However if I lived in a high traffic city I would consider it. Where I live a manual is fine for me. Manual is cheaper to maintain than a tip I would think.

The Tip trans is actually very reliable and a nice match to the car. It is nothing like your fathers slushomatic in the Caddy and if it fails there are plentiful used ones available from dismantlers for a fair price. My car is a 5 spd and I would choose it again in a 986 but I have driven several Tip 986 cars and it surprised me how good they were. Drive one and see what you think.

I personally find the tiptronic to be nothing but a gimmick, I never used it in my S8. But I'm also a devotee of the manual gearbox, so I'm biased. I don't recall seeing anything about high failure rates of the tip, but they stay on the market for a LONG time. Good when you buy, but bad when you sell.

Yep. If the build quality is there, that is worth $100k all day long, IMO. I'd rather have that than a Singer. Can you imagine how it would drive?

I thought I would post an update. The planets seemed to line up after a failed attempt to sell the 914/6 GT clone. I'll save you all the boring details but I traded the GT clone straight up for a 2002 Boxster S. I will be picking it up early February. The S is getting the following: water pump , AOS , LN IMS Solution , RMS , cam chains, full on headwork , lifters , clutch , battery plus a new vinyl rear window. Yep Jake Raby and I worked out a horse trade that benefit's both of us. Will post pics when I get her.

As a side question, I was surfing the boxster adds and a super low priced boxster S with a tip came up.

Did the S have an option of a tip?

Yes.

I have a tip in my 997, and I'm never looking back.

A lot fishy going on with that car... I was just window shopping anyway (or fantasy internet shopping).

Kinda burns me that I bought a $4000 Miata and put $4000 into
"putting a new everything" on it (PO was not big on maintenance)...

But then again a $8000 Boxster would probably need a few grand in hidden fixes.

I know... would I like some cheese with that whine?
