Are you sure on the paint? That it is a total respray already? If yes, then repaint indeed, otherwise, I'd prefer original paint with corrections and flaws over a respray. As you know, a good factory level repaint nowadays will set you back a lot of money ...

I agree with both of you but it's already been resprayed, apparently because he wanted his own version of the color. If it was original paint, it would be a totally different calculation as to whether to respray it. The windshield rubber is in bad shape, it will get a complete glass-out respray in factory color. It will be sanded down to a level where total paint on the car is as close to factory as I can get it.

Back in the early 80s, the Rabbit GTI was the hottest hatch on the market. I had grown tired of the terrible NVH of the my daily driver, a base-model stone stock '72 Corvette, and was eager to buy my first-ever new car, a black-on-gray GTI, but a charcoal Scirocco caught my eye at the dealer and was too sexy to ignore. It was brilliant even with an anemic 90hp and 13" wheels. With a sunroof, it cost me $10.5k off the lot.

I had a friend in Scotland who helped me obtain some euro-spec halogen headlights, and fitted an aftermarket oil cooler and Recaro seats I had in the Vette. The little 1.8 liter wundercar ran flawless for 10 years, and the black golf-ball shifter snicked through the gears with ease, but the water pump and fuel pump both failed within a month of each other. The head gasket blew. It was hastily traded for a Ford E250 work van I needed at the time, but man-o-man, I really missed that car.

At least until the work van helped me make enough coin to buy a '91 911 C4 sunroof coupe. If only it was lest costly to maintain than the Scirocco, I'd still have it today.

Denis - is it PNO or does it have 18000 dollars in back fees? I need to learn more about that, sometimes ads for cars say that they are "out of the DMV system" ...

... on a related note, will it pass smog with the turbo?

Cheers,

G

It’s PNO but it wouldn’t matter after 7 years, (or whatever it is). No car has $18k in back fees, at least not in this country.

Pretty sure that was a CARB approved kit. I think Banks Engineering is in Anaheim.

Please post some engine photos. Considered the turbo kit for my 81S but never pulled the trigger.
Nice grab.

I've not seen one on the road around here in a long time.

I was going to purchase on back in the 80's, it was red, and all stock. I was working in a highrise in Dallas as a security officer and the dude bought it over and I tested it in the parking garage. It could take the corners pretty good, but he wouldnt come down on the price, so I thanked him and let it go...

If I could find one for it, I'd definitely consider it. I'm not interested in stressing this little engine to see how much HP I can squeeze from it, though. In fact, if the turbo winds up being stuck or damaged from sitting, I'd gladly put it back to stock. The car weighs 1890 lbs. curb weight, from what I've been able to dig up. That makes for one fun little buggy.

I fished it out of its resting place and now just waiting for the time to re-animate it.

Thanks! It's a true time capsule because it was the car I wanted in 1980 and it's still in remarkably good shape, especially the interior. I was in college and driving a $300 Chevy at the time, this was as out of reach as it gets.

And it looks fairly presentable while you reanimate accordingly.

So happy for you.

BBS wheels?

You really scored on that one. Hope the turbo is ok and causes you no issues.
