				how long do you commute?

looking for another home and the houses in my small city have gotten very expensive (think oil boom). A 20 minute commute out of town will buy us a LOT more home for my money. This town has very limited services and a population of less than 700....we are talking small town here. I like the idea of getting out of the city....I like the homes available and the lot sizes are incredible. My travel time to work stays the same (office is 20mins away from this town and 20mins away from my current house in town.) This will add 20mins to the G/F's commute but she seems ok with it (for now).

Any of you guys living a similar lifestyle? How far would you be willing to commute for the right house/yard? Thanks

Being in rural NS and 6 minutes away from my place of work in the summertime, my only complaint is somedays I feel like taking another road so I can enjoy the top-down driving.

My last job was a big renovation on the house next door. I used to walk out the front gate and into the next place, but I found a short cut over the garage roof. Usually... If I actually had a job I mean, it would take me 45 minutes. GF works in town and she can do it in 20 minutes. |

7 miles, 3 stop signs, and one light. I turn 7 times, and on the way home, I only have one stop sign, but I have to turn left across a divided highway at that one light.

It takes me 10 minutes either way. I drive against the flow of Research Triangle Park traffic both times, so I can usually do + the speed limit. Sometimes I get behind a landscaping truck, dump truck, or slow drivin' country folks headed to Dallas Chicken 'n' Biscuits in Apex for breakfast and solvin' world issues, which might add a minute or ten. Other than that, it's a glide.

I have long commute, but I ride the train, so I can sleep. It's too long of a commute many days. BUT near home, I have nearly everything I need. I sometimes have to drive a little ways to some stores be don't have out here. I'm not sure I could live in a place where everything of value during off hours was a long drive, which sounds like what you describe.

I live in the 4th largest city in the country (in the suburbs really), my commute is about 22-23 miles, and my usual commute is 25-30 mins. I'm lucky in that I commute at off times. In the more peak hours, my commute would probably be 35-45 mins.

I consider myself pretty lucky. I had another commute a few years back that was about 35-37 miles. I that was usually a 45-60 minute commute. It was much, much worse than my current commute. I've known and worked with folks that commute 50-75 miles and drive for around an hour each way. They pay the price to live way, out of town. I wouldn't want to do that.

30 mins in the morning, 45-60 on the way home. I get to work early. If I got in the office at a normal time, it would be 45-60 mins on the way in as well. |

33 miles, all but about 2 miles is open hiway with very little traffic on hills & curves for 20 of the 33 miles. I usually make it in 35 minutes in the morning darkness; less on the trip home in the afternoon. Also generally get to do it on two wheels about 150 days a year.

Instead of purchasing while in the RE upswing, what about renting? Have your company rent the space if zoned dual-purpose, and you sublease. Oil towns can be boom-n-bust. Major investments involved here. Major stress. The whole area could lose major property value 5-10 years from now, just when you want a change in lifestyle... |

I do 45 minutes each way every day. 140 km per day, I do 1,000 km per week if I work seven days. All for family reasons. That's why I have to drive a small boring diesel.

I live 10 miles from my shop. It takes between 25-30 mins in the morning via the streets, I leave at 5:40 am. it takes 55 min to 1:10 in the evening via the streets. If I try to take the highway it's 1 hr -1 1/2 hr, it's 20 miles by highway, around the horn so to speak.
