No, because my brain doesn't even think that way.....It sounds like you were considering it and wanted to see if others approved. How would you like it if you bought a car advertised with 30,000 original miles and later found out it had 230,000? Your not inventing anything BTW....pre-computer odometer fraud has been around for years.

With my old air-cooled VWs and Porsches, I always knew how easy it was to just swap them out so never really considered the odometer reading an accurate measure of the cars milage or condition. I would pay more attention to the car it self and see if I can tell how well the previous owners had taken care of it. Kind of why when someone asks how many miles are on my car now I just shrug and say who knows.

my MB odometer died for about 1000 miles, i captured that in my mileag log that would be sold with the car...should that ever happen. for my 911, its a little more complicated. my car had about 110,000 miles, the engine about 84,000 when i got it. it had no speedo. when buying the speedo, i waited to fing one with milage close to mine. so my odometer is about 1000 miles ahead of my engine miles. i also document everything like a nutcase.

Altering the mileage is illegal BUT replacing a broken odometer gear is a common repair on a 911. many probably remain broken for long periods. I had a broken one for at least 6 months before I noticed as the speedo still works.
The speedo is also datestamped on the back. I would suspect any mid year (75-84?) that doesn,t have it,s 85 mph speedo

![]() Our Old Cars are getting so expensive now that mostly serious 911 enthusiasts are looking to buy them IMO. Their many issues are well known and that puts off a lot of newer owners. If you think swapping out a speedo with lower mileage will help you get a better price, think again. What about service and repair history? IMO You can tell how far a 911 has been driven by the overall condition of the car and I'm not pedantic like some owners I know personally. You may catch a 911 newby that has stars in his eyes but believe me these "Wood Ducks" are getting rarer with each passing year. ------- But your opening post begs the question. Why are you even asking?

That's f'd up to even think/ask about it. Have some integrity.
If you get a new/replacement/repaired speedo....run it to where it should be. Sleep good at night, every night.

Speedo swap
I replaced the 85 MPH speedo on my SC but documented the change very carefully with pictures and a newspaper in the background showing the date. The documentation is in the glovebox along with the owners manual, etc.

I have replaced speedometers in my cars before. Except I always made the mileage match.
