Ok, I might give them some slack if the whole propulsion system is different in this fictious ship.. as in all electric. Not totally up on it but if the prime mover Gas Turbine turns a generator which instead of reduction gear goes right to a permanent magnet motor on the propellor shaft this is kinda sorts feasible. Hmm no need for the variable pitch props shown in a couple scenes.
Nope still call BS.

This show's got one foot out the door and the other on a banana peel for me. Haven't watched the latest episode yet, though.

Someone recommended the book, I bought it. Not cheap... Just FYI, didn't like it much...(just my opinion, not meant as an attack to the poster who recommended it, literary tastes are very personal ;-)
It's weird: it's written about a recent subject matter (modern ship warfare, apocalypse) but in a literary style that is very 19th century, too verbose and sophisticated with philosophical digressions galore. Not that I am against "culture" or sophisticated writing, but it's a writing style you'd expect for a philosophy treaty or Moby Dick, when the subject matter is more "Tom Clancy". Made for annoying reading for the most part. I like the TV show better, although the book goes into some interesting problems and clearly lots of thought went into it ;-) Last edited by Typ616; 08-05-2014 at 07:30 PM.. |

I missed it last Sunday, but caught it this Sunday. I doubt if I'll try to see the one I missed on the TNT site.
But one question I have for those of you who served in the Navy; how realistic is it that the freakin' captain goes off ship so frequently on these risky forays? I know the storyline is somewhat apocalyptic, so there may not even be anyone of higher rank left, but it seems like it would be much wiser for the top dog to stay with the expensive hardware and the vast majority of the crew... making all those tough, scary, life & death decisions that come up in times like this... especially with the Rooskies around.

Not at all... But you've just destroyed the premisce for every star trek episode, too ;-) It's just TV, it's not the worst show out there...

Man, where to start? They could have a more realistic crew makeup. I watched all the episodes today. I counted 4 Chief Petty Officers, Only one, the Master Chief, wasn't a cowering mess. A LtJG working on machinery and telling a Senior Chief what to do? A junior grade has about 18 months in the Navy, a Senior Chief around 16+ years. I wonder why the Helo reported gear down and locked? I was unaware there was any other position for an SH-60. It's all good, I guess their adviser was an ROTC dropout. There is sooooo much more, but I know where it came from and it seems like an O.K. story.

"Brakes on/off" was the only part of the landing check list I gave a crap about, especially leaving the small boy for terra firma...way too many sad endings for the aircraft commander.
