Thanks guys. I do like the foxes. The big mangy coyotes know the sting of my pellet gun in their butt but it was those little guys I needed the help ID'ing. I have one dog that would be prey, a 20kg pitt bull that is sweeter than pie. Otto could handle his own, he's a 50kg Rhodesian with a pair. Also two kids under 4 who have free reign of the yard so I just don't like predators hanging around.

Coyotes are nasty. They are fearless of humans around here, and take any dog left outside between dust to dawn up to 60 pounds. Most are plagued with mange and almost hairless.

I have cats that come by and lounge around outside. They follow me around the yard when im out there workin on stuff. I explain why I shoot ...uh...why some people might shoot pellets at owls, foxes, and coyotes that run in the back yard this way: If I had pet foxes, then I'd shoot the cats.

Foxes very frequently are rabid. Honestly, I'm more worried about them than coyotes because of this. Because of their small size, they often live in much closer proximity to humans.

Several years ago there was a bounty here on foxes because so many were rabid. As you know, full blown rabies is 100 percent fatal to humans.

They be foxes

Foxes carry rabies.
I suppose its because they eat dying and dead bats who always have the rabies ( & like) virus in their population.

We havent had any human rabies in my area yet, but I know that if a case is detected - the order goes out to kill ALL foxes.

The biggest population of foxes in my urban suburb is in the local cemetery. They have burrowed into the older graves, under the headstones. and made dens on&in the coffins.

We've had to shoot two who were obviously rabid...any fox I see in broad day light is suspect. You know it when you see it.

Otherwise, they help with pest control. Our chickens have a high coop, the barn cats have never been bothered by them and my dogs are all of size and temperament to be safe and are in at night.

We have a "San Pedro" Facebook page (I know... facebook ) anyway.

People have started spotting coyote in San Pedro... I have lived here for over 50 years, hiked the hills extensively and never seen a coyote. Yes, we have coyote in SoCal, however S.P. is the southern most tip of Los Angeles and separated from any wilderness by about 50 miles or more... so unless the yotes are commuting via the diamond lane I think the newby locals are seeing foxes.

We had a pair of foxes take up residence across the street 2 summers ago. The cat population took a hit I believe but they were a non-issue other than really cool to see at night. Rabbits all year. Raccoon are the real pests here. I have also seen skunks. Deer to the north of the city are common as you know.

The only coyote I have seen was at the airport 10-12 years ago. One was running near a runway as my plane was landing. I also heard some one night in the Bayview/7 area 15 years ago before the last building surge there.

I live DVP/401 area.
