I hate their gas gauges.

Seems every time I pick up a truck the gauge is dead nuts on F but when you fill it up for the return the gauge always goes past F.

I considered U-Haul for a big move once upon a time:
-"Ok. I need x size. One-way to x location. On x date. Tentatively arriving on x to x date. How much?"
-"I can't give you an answer right now. I can't guarantee the vehicle will be on-site. Call two days before you need it. "
-"It will be ~$3,000."

Definite maybe with more stress?
No thanks.
Instead, I bought a van and resold it losing less than U-Haul's price.
I probably could have made a profit.

As the OP mentioned, U-Haul has an internal .db/communcations system problem.

Completely the fault of management.
It has been a problem for the last 20+ years.

I have rented from U-Haul, Ryder, and many others.

The only problem I've ever had was with Hertz. Hate them. U-Haul is slow as hell, but they do OK for me.

my penske story. i rented from them. the smallest truck that could pull a car trailer. i was moving from texas to CA. the truck was essentially empty, but i needed it for the towing my truck. my new job was covering 90% of the expenses anyways. whatever. my own personal car was tiny and feeble. my mattress wouldnt fit.

i had a friend that had an interview in LA. she was broke, and asked if i could drop her off. sure...free ride for her, someone to talk to while i drive. win!

i get to LA, and she directs me to her mom's house. hmmm...sure looks like Comptom. hmmm.. IT IS COMPTON!! i drop her off at night..8:00 pm ish. leaving her house..BOOM! a tire blows out on the trailer..i look and the remaining tire on that side of the tandom looks really bad too.. i pull over to a gas station, right when the shop owner was pulling this armor shield over his windows and doors. he looks at me, gives me his blessing to park there, scurries away. i call penske. the nicest lady answers looks at my position on a map...and says, "OMG! you're in compton..cage and figeroa. " yup..she tells me she cannot get someone to me till 8:00 am. and hangs up on me.

scariest night of my life. gunfire. hookers and blow. gunfire..slow cars circling me..i stabbed my knife into the dash for a quick grab..and hunkered down. if there was ever a time i needed a gun.. people knocking on my window all night...

they never charged me for putting the knife wound into the new dash..

I went on Uhaul.com earlier in the week and reserved the truck and located a dealer near the MIL's place. No problems at all. My wife called them a few days later and added a car dolly to the order.

Went to pick it up this morning and the dealer's internet was down. He called it in to the area office and they emailed us a copy of everything. Pack up her crap and drove to our house. Check the receipt and they didn't charge us for the dolly. Oh well....

Tomorrow we meet the SIL in Naples and throw her the keys and put the MIL in the passenger seat and we drive home and live very happier ever after!
Story update.....

Sunday AM we meet the SIL and they drive South and we drive North. Life is good.

This morning my wife looks and we have a $66.00 chage on the CC. Seems after the SIL dropped it off they found damage to the TOP of the truck and hit us with the charge. The damage was not noted as existing by the old guy when I picked it up. I never saw any damage or I would have noted it. The "supervisior" where it was dropped off won't take our calls. We get put on hold forever. What a ****** racket. They can't prove the damage but I get charged because I have a CC and the MIL/SIL don't. Screwed again.

Legion, I'm glad to hear things with U-haul worked out with you but they lost my business for ever many years ago.

I rented a 24' U-haul truck that wouldn't go over 35 mph. Of course I didn't realize this until I was on an expressway!!! After many hours they replaced the truck with a newer one that would reach highway speeds. Then a week or two later they called asking if I was going to return their truck, the same truck I returned the same day I rented it.

Not to go too far into PARF, but repeat problems which damage the customer becomes a fraud issue over time.

Report the unauthorized charge to your CC company and have them deal with it.

Yeah Uhaul has jerked me around too. I have a 2003 Ford Explorer and they will not let me rent any of their trailers. This is due to the Firestone tire issues that were resolved before I bought my car. This has caused me no end of grief and expense since now I have to rent a truck and a trailer if I pick up a car for resto or pay to have it shipped.

It is just an excuse for them to stick me with a truck rental that I do not need

UHaul = Screw Y'All!

I moved into college with a U-Haul, (without discussing all negative aspects of the experience) the total charge should have been $148...I was in the smart math class.

Upon return, I whip out a small wad of cash, $400 in 20s and smaller folded in half. Guy at the counter shiftily looks at it, and proceeds to tell me the total was $580, but he would be happy to take $500 if it was cash.

After a lengthy discussion of "you must think I'm stupid because i'm 18 with some cash" I put a $100 on the counter, told him to call the cops, and walked out.

Funny how nothing ever came of that.

I own some property beside the local U-Haul. They put a sign on the chain link fence (facing my property) that says 'U-Haul Parking'.

And you can guess how much they pay me...

I should, but it's their fence. I could just paint the back side of the sign.

There was someone parking there the other day, I walked by and said 'Are we allowed to park here?'. She says 'Yea, the people in the office said it was fine'.

Yea, it's not our property, we don't have enough parking spots, so just park on the private property beside us...

To hell with that. Post your own "No parking" signs on stakes on your property, and tell the Uhaul manager that they are not allowed to have their customers park there.

U-Haul is the only company that will rent trailers for a one-way move that you can tow with your own vehicle. Penske, Ryder, and Budget all require their trailers to be towed with their trucks. I needed to get my truck to Georgia too.

The rest of the move went off pretty smoothly. The 6% downhill grade on I-24 oustside of Chatanooga proved to be no problem with my truck in 2nd gear. (The first time I did that hill in my truck, I didn't understand the severity of the grade, was at 75 mph at the top of the hill, and by the bottom of the hill I was doing 95 and my brakes had completely faded.)

Screw them.

Why are you not charging them rent?

What happens when one of their customers trips and falls on your property.

A conversation with the manager and a certified letter to him/her and corporate are in order.
