Though I do hear them coming (HDs and the screaming sport bikes), I tend to agree that’s more about “look at me, I’m so bad-azz I should be in SAMCRO” or “look at me, I should be racing with Rossi on a road course”, than it is about safety. And that throttle blip every second at a stoplight is
![]() . Of course my DD 993 has Fister Stage 3 mufflers, so maybe I don’t have a dog in this fight. While on the subject, what is up with some pickup truck owners? SHEEESH! A few weeks ago, I was on my way home from work. I was stopped at a traffic light with my windows down. A pickup truck was next to me (on my driver’s side). I could tell by the way this jerk was posturing in his truck that he had something to “show me”! He kept trying to inch forward so that he could get the rear of his truck closer to my window; my car is pretty low. The light changes to green and it was almost as if he floored his brakes and accelerator simultaneously. It was the loudest most obnoxious sound I ever heard from an engine; it actually sounded broken. It was completely void of performance or a recognizable V8 muscle sound. It was just noise…a stupid loud shockwave. Even a top fuel funny car sounded better. The sound actually made my teeth hurt. I did my best to ignore him. Did not look over. Did not curse or gesture. Just remained unaffected. I never wanted to drag someone out of their vehicle and repeatedly punch them in the face as much as I wanted to in that moment!

Nothing beer than a 15 count Jap-Bike crowd rolling into Arby's, straight pipes bouncing off the rev-limiters. HOWEVER... The newest source of ludicrosity (thats probably not a real word) are the radios on HDs, not to mention the touch-screens. ![]() If the pipes aren't obnoxious enough, these clowns are riding around with the radio blaring Bon Jovi "Wanted Dead or Alive"...

As has been said loud pipes for their own sake, along with the blipping, is just aggravating. Hell, the morons that swap factorys with the cross overs for straight pipes are actually loosing power. As for a Duck with Termigoni exhaughts - that's loudness of a completely different animal. The pipes actually effect some more than noise levels. The HD sound is one akin to a long tractor fart.....burbling out and going nowhere.... |

There are laws against straight pipes, aren't there? Maybe they should just enforce the laws? Or is that too difficult?

Enforce laws? They would have to obey them first...

So I'm the only one who rolls down the window when they see a large group of motorcycle headed for their way on a two lane road.

I was pumping diesel the other day, into my truck ($90 worth), and one of those "look at me" idiots came barreling up to the stop light on a custom bike with the really big chrome wheels and a wild paint job. He had his stereo cranked so loud, I could barely hear his straight pipes cackling. I make it a point not to even glance in their direction for fear of stroking thier egos....what a tool.

Unfortunately, they DO enforce sound limits. I was cited on Mulholland Hwy just above the Rock Store for "Illegal Exhaust" and 'No front license plate". My car is not that loud under 4500 RPM. This pull-over was a "visual" on the front plate, then he walked back to look.

I used to ride, and am looking for a new ride (past: Yamaha Seca 750, future: Suzuki V-strom 650 ?).
I understand the 'I want to do everything to make myself known' idea, but in reality, it doesn't work. Inattentive drivers simply don't see bikes. A motorcycle is 1/4 the size of a modern car, or even less. The average car/suv driver simply does not pay enough attention on the road to consider smaller vehicles out there, especially in in the North East. I've had cars turn on their signal, look at me (or through me) in their review mirror, and turn into my lane when I was riding, despite my rather bright headlight. A loud exhaust doesn't help too much when you are cruising at highway speeds and a car infront of you desides to change lanes into you. By the time you blip the throttle, it is too late. Used to be that HD riders were a rough crowd. Hooligans, criminals, mean old folks with beards and scars. At least that is what the stereotype was. These days, riding a Harley is very trendy. So the corporate businessman / executive is the new HD rider. Why do they need loud pipes? Perhaps to compensate for a small winkie, or the fact that their bosses belittle them. While some believe in the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" mentality, it is really more of a "Look at Me! I ride a Harley because I am Over-compensating for my Insecurities" phrase the applies more... Ducking for cover... -Z-man.

And yeah, gotta love those sports bike screaming down the freeway at redline... at 55MPH. And the Harley need those loud pipes... it is obvious how concerned they are about safety! (Dressed all in black with their little beanie helmets) ![]() But seriously, needlessly loud bikes are just bad ambassadors to the not rider crowd.

^^^ Yep...I normally don't ride in traffic and sit at lights if I can help it though.
Serious question for y'all (and I mentioned it earlier). Have you EVER heard a bike come up on you before you saw it? I KNOW folks "hear" my Carrera many times before they actually see that tiny thing amongst the big SUVs, etc. I'm sure many of you are like I am (pretty aware and I drive paying attention) and I absolutely HEAR bikes all the time before I see 'em. If that's the case, then yep, loud pipes DO make a difference...just my .02 (again)
