LOL. Vinman, HDs are heavy, theyre slow. Theyre state of art engineering c.1933. The only thing theyre good at is making noise and lets be honest, they sound bloody awful. They are an affectation, a lifestyle statement. That's OK.

Theyre called stereotypes for a reason....YMCA....

Not for "loud pipes". He wrote me for "illegal exhaust". Never said a word about it being too loud. Apparently, he was having a bad day, or some guy in a Porsche is dating his ex-wife. He flashed the lights and siren as I was heading toward him. Asked for the usual documents, then brought up the lack of front plate. He walked all the way around the car inspecting. Came back, pulled on my harnesses, shook my lollipop seat to see if they were secured down I guess, and said "That's not OEM exhaust". Just my luck...The Rock Store photographer was shooting "The Snake" that morning

Hmmm, Actually your wrong on couple of those points, and I'm no HD Fanboy. In our instrumented testing, the new new Harley was Quicker and stopped shorter then the BMW......that is a fact.....That being said I still prefer the BMW

I started seeing these "Loud Pipes Save Lives" stickers in Daytona Beach during Bike Week in the late 1980s. I think now what I thought then: This is nonsense conjured up by look-at-me knotheads who are trying to justify stupidly loud exhaust systems. I can think of few sounds more awful than a Harley without silencers. A bone saw, maybe. For sure, riding any distance on a loud-pipe Harley would drive you nuts. Or at least it would drive me nuts. But of course, I am ancient....

One cannot deny that the noise makes you more noticeable.
Being noticed MAY save your life. Pretty simple equation, really.

I own quiet motorcycles, nevertheless.
Non-H D, in my case, although I do not have a problem with the H D's, or the "H D-types".
As a matter of fact, I rather enjoy observing the wacky lifestyle statement.

Vin,

If the stereotype does not describe you, than you should not take offense. However, if you are being objective, the stereotype exists because of the pirate garbed, nazi helmet wearing, straight pipe riding fools, who gave rise to this thread to begin with. Yes, you know the type...

Making racket for its own sake, with a reduction in HP and torque is just ridiculous. And begs the question Why?! Plenty of arm chair psychology could give a number of reasons.

You have piqued my curiosity! Which BMW? Guessing not a SS1000R back to back with a Sporty of equal displacement? Which HD? Really, stopped shorter? Huh, hard to believe. Love to hear more

Methinks I have the "stereotypes" down now....BOTH my HD and my Carrera are LOUD and EXTREMELY SLOW by modern standards...but both put a smile on my face

If I'm in the Carrera...I'm the prick on the inside...(but NOT ON THIS BOARD)...for some reason that gets a "free pass" here...hmmm.
If I'm on the Harley....I'm the prick "poser" riding it to impress someone...

Can you help me understand the difference fellows?

Don't really care...I'm just a bit surprised at the "double standards" that are applied to each air cooled machine.

I also prefer ancient outdated lever actions too...
And my ancient two-cycle 150 hp bass boat...
And my ancient stereo (still replicates the "wall of sound" pretty well though)...
And my ancient....

Actually I'm not surprised at all....it's PPOT .

One of these daze I'm gonna get me something new: A GET OFF MY LAWN sign...but I'm just not quite there yet...maybe I'll just go steal Sammys

I would be curious to know what year your porsche is and what motor vehicle code he cited

That's the truth. My ex-wife and her husband both have HD's. They wear HD watches, belts, shoes, and I'm sure have HD sheets on their bed. At my daughter's graduation she saw me in the 997S and said.."You're a yuppie poser git". LOL...there are probably more people who stereotype Porsche owners as yuppie scum then HD owners as Hell's Angels wannabes.

"Ancient outdated lever-actions"...Now you're talking my language!

I do not think folks here are speaking of regular cats, riding HDs, they are referriong to the jacked up with straight pipes, ape hangers, wearing pirate garb, YMCA stuff... not really a double standard, apples and oranges.

But the Harley crowd does seem to be sucked into the "image" machine, buying all the "gear", the "life style crowd" - rebel sheep. The sheets, the mugs, the shirts, the goofy ass "do rags" etc, all in the name of establishing oneself and a societal outlaw, on the edge... whatever, a crowd of lemmings.

ATGATT.... not... so much for loud pipes...

Just like this:

Or this:

You either dress like a YMCA reject, the gimp, or like you've been visited by the spandex fairy.
It's all name brand, logo-liscious, poser-iffic, and look-at-me bull****.

That picture of the three amigos is a riot. So much to see there. The guy on the right has his leathers tucked into his paratrooper boots. And Geddy Lee called, he wants his shades back. The tough guy on the left looks like every single thing on his body is brand spanking new, including the brass knuckle on his belt buckle and the skull-head neckerchief.
As for David Hopper, (Dennis' younger brother) nothing more needs to be said....

That is one of the odd things about low and long cruisers. They "can" out stop a sportbike. Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic has documented it.

The sportbike will try and rotate over the front wheel where the long wheelbase and low cg of a cruiser will not.

I give the air quote to can because it takes skills that many cruiser riders do not develop. Loading the front tire until it is at maximum grip. I have ridden a relatives HD and I think it would take two hands on the brake lever to generate the stopping power I can get with two fingers on my race bikes, so it is also a question of hardware. (master cylinder, brake lines, pad compound and rotor size/ type)

Plenty of B riders at track days can get the back end of a sportbike pattering in the braking zone. Tipping in with it airborne is where it gets tricky.
