Thanks for all the tips. Some great things to consider, although I am still partial to buying a preexisting home. The hardest part would be reigning in the missus on the budget.

As others have said here, plan for 20-30% more than you think.
Do an extensive check on zoning, permits and utility information. Also make sure that the property lines are the same as what they say in the building office. Talk to an attorney well versed in construction law about such things before you start. Assume the architect knows nothing. The PE is the guy you want to be friendly with. Make sure his stamp is on everything. Cost-plus contracts can be good or bad depending on the GC. Do your research. Either way, try not to make his life or the crew's life harder. A six pack of beer on Friday at quitting time will go a long way. Construction workers are rough around the edges, but some of the hardest working people on earth. I spent most of my childhood/teens building homes with my dad in SoCal. Your results may vary.
