If you can afford a $100k Mustang, you can also afford to take lessons on how to drive. Yeah - young drivers are all EXPERT drivers and mad drifters blah blah blah - but in reality they are either lucky, or dead.

Granted, the track has its own dangers -- but there are significantly better precautions there - everyone is usually going the same way, there is safetly equipment (helmets, roll cages, fire marshals, ambulance...etc). So if something bad happens, the damage is minimized.

Bottom line: Street racing is for idiots with no brains and tiny balls.

calling these clowns 'serious racers' is a farking joke.

they are pussies who are afraid to put themselves up against people with real talent and commitment.

the serious guys are at the track where the world can see what talent they do or do not have.

It's disturbing. I have a 13yo boy who presumably will be driving in a few short years...and likes Mustangs. He is no dummy by any stretch but nonetheless I will do everything I can to encourage sane behavior. I plan to bring him to a performance driving school or POC clinic as soon as he's old enough.

I think there are several places that offer courses specifically for new, teenage drivers.

yep. i've watched portions of WRC races and it is my opinion that the spectators are dumb as cattle. it is amazing to me that more of them don't die.

Owner of Mustang charged with 2 counts of Murder. He says he wasn't driving, but is seen in video as starter for the race. They said that he stated that he didn't know the driver. The whole scene stinks. The need for speed is age old and I understand that, but the mentality of the people that I've seen in all the videos of street racing isn't exactly stellar. The National Geographic video of the street racers in Compton suggest it as an alternative to the gang scene. Even the encounters at the NHRA track seem not to be of very high caliber. All petrol heads will suffer from the mistakes made by other petrol heads. The need for speed is not the problem. It is the bad decisions that we humans make and that includes the two who died in this horrible accident. The whole scenes I've seen involve series upon series of bad decisions.

The large majority of car commercials, even minivans show the cars sliding around and spinning. Of course they are under closed conditions with a professional driver but the entire message is this car is so fast it is amazing. The rest of the commercials have a pretty girl to sell them.

The ultimate message from the ads is cars are really fast and you will have pretty women wanting to have sex with you. Of course they sell every product with that same message.

Kids grow up watching fast and furious and figure driving like that must be easy.

Just watch YouTube for a few minutes and see tons of absolute idiots try stupid things. Hey y'all hold ma beer and watch this.

Was anybody there against their will? Was anyone who was there unaware that there was going to be racing going on? In other words, were any innocent, unsuspecting bystanders killed or injured? I'm going to go out on a limb and answer "no" to all three questions.

As such, why would the rest of us even give a sheet? If these maroons want to go off somewhere, block off a street, clear out the civilians and race, I'm going to have a hard time working up either sympathy for the dead or outrage against the rest. Now if they are doing it in a school zone when school gets out, that's another story. But they're not...

Mr Higgins, I care because they are liable to kill someone who is not aware what is going on, or a kid with irresponsible parents, or someone on their way somewhere else.

Last night, I was driving my grandson home from his karate class and was sitting in the center lane, waiting to make a left turn. A newish Mustang with an illegal exhaust went by going the other direction approaching a very busy interchange. The speed limit there is 35 mph. He was going at least twice that fast and passed within a foot or two of my car. If he had sneezed or twitched, I would be dead as Dillinger and it would not have done my grandson a bit of good either. He almost ran over a homeless guy not ten seconds after he passed us.

Tobra, most of these kinds of street races take place far away from any innocents. That's why I asked the questions I asked. I did mention that I see it as a whole different situation when they do it in and around the rest of us. You have to go a long ways out of your way, and know the "right" (really the "wrong"...) people to even find and go watch an organized street race. No one is there who didn't put some effort into being there. There are no "innocent bystanders". These are far, far different than a couple of knuckleheads who just happened upon one another at a stop light and engaged in an impromptu race.

Your guy in the Mustang was not "street racing". He was just being a dick.

Actually, he was racing a guy in some sort of Honda that was one lane over, and backed out of the gas when they started coming up on traffic. Not an arranged race, more a race of opportunity is how it looked to me.

While I would agree that most there(race mentioned in OP) were probably there on purpose, it certainly seems conceivable that innocent parties could wander into the wrong place at the wrong time.
